Valuable help to learn - not just a repetition of ECMA script.
In spite of wanting to delay the review of the Second Edition of this book, I thought it warrants rendering my opinion. In order to put things in proper perspective, I want to say I am a retired programming enthusiast, who never worked in a programming environment.I purchased five recently published JavaScript books, which I read in parallel. I also take care to work through all programming exercises before I proceed to the next chapter. I covered only about 25% of this book, as well as four others I use for my learning. This approach helps me decide which book explains a certain topic better. This book is different in describing JavaScript. Having examples presented in detail highly enhances my learning. It is true that those who already have a good knowledge of the subject find the repetition of code explanation superfluous, but I found it helpful. I think a great value to this book lies in the background of the author, who has been teaching live audiences for many years. This is in opposition to those who sit in their room and decide to write on a subject. Teaching students brings out questions that do not occur to an author who is removed from a teaching environment.I find this book one of the best covering the subject matter. When I read chapters in other JavaScript books, which are difficult to understand, I return to this book for clarity. It is true, as other reviewers stated, there are some deprecated forms in this book. However, all current browsers can handle them, and in time, the reader will also understand the updated usage.I give four stars to this book, and will follow up with a full review once I have finished all of it. In any case, I only expect my opinion to improve.

Understandable Javascript
At last, a Javascript book that is understandable for beginners. I have been looking for a while at various texts, even those titled for beginners, but nobody could really explain it to beginners in easy understandable English. That's what I enjoy about this book. Sure, there is plenty of jargon speak, but it makes sense the way it is explained and shown in examples. I've only started on a couple of chapters so far, but I am enjoying it.One thing I picked up was the out-dated html used in the examples. This is probably a carry-over from the first edition. If you're not worried about currency issues, they work fine. I just modify them using css in the head section.Great book so far...Bobby

my college teacher recommended
My college teacher recommended this book when I was taking JavaScript class.I already had a bunch of books on javascript, but this one I found the best.Easy to follow, nice and clean examples, and the most - examples you can use on daily bases at your projects.I am a Front End Developer and not new in JavaScript but sometimes I miss simple and basic stuff which this book provides. Also, it helped me to be better prepared for interviews when I was searching for new opportunities :-). The book has all answers to all interview questions you may get. And even if you don't know a lot about the subject you are still able to answer.

This could have been a very good book
if the author had bothered to proofread the text or provide an errata on the publisher's website. The downloadable code is an unmitigated disaster which neither the author or publisher has seen fit to correct by errata or correction to the code. Although the author claims to have tested all the code, such claim is made laughable by, among other glaring errors, the presence of a link to a sado-masochistic porn site in Example 14-35. Yes, I'm serious. The pathetic state of the downloadable code makes the book near worthless to a beginner as it takes some familiarity with JavaScript to begin with to correct the many and obvious code errors that render many of the examples incapable of being run.I don't know Ms. Quigley from Eve, thus my unbiased review comes from my actual use of the book and the code. If you want to buy it based on the dumbfoundingly glowing reviews from others, be my guest. Just remember who warned you.Do yourself a favor. Save yourself some money and considerable aggravation. DO NOT buy this book.

Perfect book for a beginner!
I haven't programmed a computer since my good ol' Commodore 64 back in the 80's. The last computer language I used was Basic 2.0. So when I wanted to learn Javascript, I started searching online and at local retailers for a book that would ease me through the process of learning as a beginner. This book is brilliant for that purpose. Each section starts out with an explanation, followed by code, followed by description of what each line of code does. I haven't finished reading the book, but so far, I couldn't have asked for anything more.A++

Easy to follow, logical order
This book teaches JS in an easy to follow, logical order for learning. The examples and explanations they provide are really helpful. One of the better books I have read on the subject.
