Definitely only extra protection. Although there is a waterproof layer there is limited absorbancy.

Do these crinkle when worn?

No they do not crinkle when worn, they are just as soft and comfortable to wear as other cotton knickers but they are excellent at retaining a small amount of fluid, for heavier periods we have bought period pants, but these are great for lighter days and when you are not sure when the next period is due. My daughter wears them all the time and they fit and wash well

My daughter is 11 but wearing clothes size for 12-13years old. I ordered them for 12 year old and they were perfect. I would say order size 15-16 years old and should be fine. Hope this help.
