This is a stunningly beautiful book of indigenous masks from throughout the world so handsomely photographed. A towering achievement in photographic books and in documenting what we are losing.

The portraits in the book are gorgeous, mystical renderings of masks. To see them photographed on-location, worn by the people who either made them, preserved them for decades, or use them in rituals to this day, is a treat. Chris Rainier is seeking to do for indigenous cultures what his mentor Ansel Adams did for our national parks.

A cool book but an impulse buy I wish I had let pass.

This is a stunning book, well presented and rightly sized to give the photography room to truly take over. The importance of images such as these being captured in situ, showing the masks in their true environment cannot be overstated. Rainier has done both us and the ritual practitioners a great service in putting this body of work together.

The photos are amazing. As a mask collector and aficionado this book is a must-have.
