Big hit
I purchased this book for a client. She is obsessed with Little House. As a matter a fact, during the Christmas holiday she actually made a Little House gingerbread house. When she opened this you would think I put a thousand dollar in the box

The Books Are Very Different From the TV Series
I have really enjoyed the books. As a middle school English teacher I used many of them for reading and writing assignments, often requiring students to compare life during the late 1800's with life today. I also enjoy figuring out different recipes and fixing them in my own kitchen. First rate. Shame of the modern morons who try to make them into what they are not; racist and intolerant.

An ok read -- kids might like it better
As an adult who has always loved all things "Little House" I was interested to find this new series of books, and ordered this volume quickly. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. My complaints echo to some degree those in the other reviews.1. The characterization just didn't feel like the Mary we knew from Laura's books. Maybe it's the different writing style, but her speech and behavior seemed wrong, and often unbelievable.2. The author seemed to want to mix the 'real' history of the Ingalls family with that portrayed in the books, with sometimes odd results. (In the books, Mary left for college in August. In real life, and here, she arrived in November. The lunch box of fried blackbirds was believable in August. By November, surely the birds had flown south. November was also pretty late for fall-cleaning. And some were just, as mentioned above, somewhat out of character. Laura told us that she had to thread Mary's needles for sewing. Here, Mary threaded them herself. In the books, Laura talked about how, aside from some housework and guided walks around the prarie, Mary mostly 'sat quiet in her chair' Here we are told that Mary had learned to walk freely around De Smet.3. Some of it was 'modern' ... not 1883. Blanche uses the term 'partially sighted' -- NOT a phrase that would have been in vogue then.Children might not notice many of the issues that kept me from enjoying the book, but for me, it was disappointing.

This is a good book. It has Mary Ingalls point of view ...
Mary Ingalls on Her Own. This is a good book. It has Mary Ingalls point of view from when she left her home and family to attend The Iowa College (They called school's for the blind colleges back then) She meets her school principal and her roommate Blanche. She also meets another girl, a bitter young woman named Mattie. Later on, she meets her other roommate named Hannah. At first Mary is very homesick of course but keeps her crying in her pillow. She meets a young man there that reads her letter to her that Laura has written, his name is Ben Holden. It's a short book but very enjoyable.

Love this book.
I have a collection of Little House on the Prairie books and was happy to see there was a book about Mary and her first year at college. I'm not sure if the book is mainly factual but I do know that the author tried to stay true to the series. Great book to read and have for your collection.

A bit of a lacklustre ending.
I was actually hoping this was going to turn out to be another series like the Caroline Years or Rose Years , however, there doesn’t appear to be another, judging by the “wrap up biography” of Mary’s life at the end of this. And it has been out since 2008 with no sign of a follow up.The issue with Mary is that you only had so much to go on, from what Laura included of her. And not much is known about her time in college, although the college is still going strong and has a section on its website dedicated to Mary. The TV show glossed over her experience at the blind school, having her fall in love almost instantaneously with Adam Kendall, the fellow blind teacher. I was glad the author didn’t go down this route, but went her own way of imagining what Mary’s feelings were, and using the website for her classes/timeline etc.The original Laura books are clearly loved by the author, as it sticks fairly closely to the formula. The chapters are short and sweet, and include “life lessons” within. Nellie reappears ... in the guise of Mattie, Mary‘s new nemesis at college. And there’s a potential love interest for Mary, while she blushes and all but swoons for Ben (not Adam.)But the book just stops. It feel like only a couple of months are covered, between the start of the school year at the college, to Christmas Eve. I feel like so much more could have been covered, if the author had perhaps stretched out the story over a couple more books. Maybe not gone down the route of seven, as that would have been too much, but Mary was at college for 4 years after all. And then she would have gone back home. Maybe I have been spoilt, because the Rose and Caroline years have all been 7 or 8 books, to stick to the same style as the Laura books.A disappointing ending. I am hoping that there is still scope for the imagination in spin offs for the original Laura books. We’ve had a series on Caroline and Rose, there’s a series on Charlotte , Laura’s grandmother and Martha , Laura’s great grandmother. There’s still potential for Carrie and Grace and more besides. I ENJOYED THIS BOOK IMMENSELY, IT SHOWED HOW QUICKLY MARY WAS ABLE TOLEARN THINGS AGAIN, THAT SHE HAD TAKEN FOR GRANTED BEFORE GOING BLIND.THE CHARACTERS OF HER FRIENDS AT THE COLLEGE WERE KIND, AND MARY ALSODEALT WITH THE NASTINESS OF MATTIE VERY WELL, BY NOT STOOPING TO HER LEVEL.THIS BOOK WAS VERY WELL WRITTEN, IN ALL AN INTERESTING BOOK.
