Not "why" I bought it...but, it saves me money and time...
I initially wanted to be able to cook/steam rice and make homemade soups and sauces. But, I found out that this clay dome pot has many more uses. It does take 1/2cup of triple washed white rice...and turns it into 3 cups of puffed steam rice in 30min. It takes my 1/4" Rigatoni noodles, and converts them into beautiful 3/4" "large" pieces of pasta. The key point is that IF you just let the pot work its magic...ON LOW HEAT...just leave it alone for 30min undisturbed....it will be perfect.I smothered chicken and garden vegs (carrots, onion, leeks), garlic...and just let it go for 1 hr on low....simply fabulous.Good ingredients and patience equals value. Meaning the $$ value is found is in how much "less" food you need to cook, to get a better end product yield!! Hello!!....and so far there are NO bad meals...so I say it's a win/win.

Amazing!
I adore this pot! Absolute beautiful! I made a bean and vegetable chicken soup in it. My dry beans cooked in it to perfection. Always the lowest flame setting. Highly recommend.

Pretty pot
Had to giggle because the directions are in Japanese. Used Google translator, but not quite sure I got the full gist of cleaning.Product is pretty, authentic looking. I used it on the gas stove. A bit afraid to use a lot of flame on it.Original purpose of pot was to make nabe at the kitchen table with a warming plate. Little did I know California does not allow the sale of butane canisters (thanks to the druggies who burn or make honey oil).

We are trying to take the pressure off our 1970 mingei donabe, which has lost one of its ears. This is "new Japan," but heats the right way. To the person who complained it quickly cracked, always start it off on low, then slowly increase the heat as the pot heats. If you treat it well, this too may last 45 years.

Works great for 4!
This is really pretty! Very traditional looking and works great. It's definitely only big enough for 4 people though. If you get soy sauce on the bottom of the pot it doesn't come off. Not a big deal but just so you know.
