Works great as it's intended purpose
I was skeptical because of all the negative reviews.. People don't read that it's only a listener. I have a new house with everything hardwired in. I put one in the garage next to a detector and one upstairs as well. If one or any smoke or carbon detector goes off they'll all go off. After installing first one I stuffed it under a bunch of cushions while installing the next one to not set it off. I've had these now for a few months, they work great and haven't had a single false alarm.

Excellent smoke and CO detectors that are easy to install
Easy to install the mount on the ceiling, and then attach this detector onto the mount. If you're away and have smoke in your house, you'll want to know. If you're away and have carbon monoxide in your house and have a pet in the house, then you'll want to know. This is very clever: no wiring is needed. Power is from a battery. Detection is by listening for the smoke alarm or the CO alarm. Those sound different, so the Ring detector can distinguish.I bought a pair: one for my upstairs hallway and one for my downstairs. I mounted each Ring detector next to the CO and smoke detectors on my hallway ceiling. This takes care of my whole house, because if any smoke detector, including in the bedrooms, starts to ring, then all the smoke detectors, including those in the hallway, will ring.I'm giving this four stars instead of five, perhaps unfairly, because this product does only what is advertised. It does not respond to my flood-sensor alarms, which sound different. These Ring sensors are clever.

NOT A SMOKE DETECTOR, it’s a LISTENER!
Please be warned, DO NOT DISCARD YOUR CURRENT SMOKE DETECTORS FOR THIS UNIT. This is not a smoke detector. This is a device that listens for your existing detector. It is a good tool in cases where you are not home and your fire alarm is going off. You may render aide to your home instantly and minimize potential loss of property. The device has to work with an existing advice. Be sure to install properly. There is an arrow on the mount that must be pointing at your existing alarm. If you don’t care to know if your fire alarm is goin off, this product isn’t for you. It literally is only listening for your current device.

Peace of mind
I got these for peace of mind when I am not home. They are easy to install, but be very careful that a programmed one does not hear you programming another alarm or it will go off. They are very careful about warning you in the app. I took each one outside and did them individually with no issue.

WARNING - FAILED TO DISPATCH EMERGENCY SERVICES
WARNING: If you set this up and it only hears "CO" from your smoke detector, RETURN IT IMMEDIATELY! If you are going to need replacing the detectors to make this work, you might as well get one(s) with z-wave that don't need a listener to hook into Ring alarm. Full story below:If you buy this, and during the setup it detects your smoke alarm sound as "CO", and doesn't detect "smoke/fire", your detector is likely incompatible with this listener. I had mine set up for over a year, the listener was in state "actively listening", with no indication of a compatibility issues. When we had an actual fire started in the kitchen (grease fire on stove), the smoke alarm went off for over 15 minutes because the whole house filled with smoke. This listener detected NOTHING during the fire despite all the noise from my smoke alarm and the listener being no more than 2 inches from the alarm. After spending hours on the phone with Ring support, I'm told it's because my detector is incompatible with the listener. The only evidence of incompatibility is that the listener only detected "CO" alarm and not smoke/fire. Since I'm finding this out over a year from installation, I'm unable to return this product. I don't even know what detector to replace mine with that will actually work with this listener. As an added bonus, during troubleshooting I managed to trigger it while not in testing mode and ended up having a firetruck show up at the house days after the fire.Ring: HOW MANY HOMES / LIVES HAVE TO BE LOST BEFORE YOU CHANGE YOUR PRODUCT? Users should get a warning (preferably one that's very obvious and hard to ignore), if their detector is incompatible.Technical detail: My alarm emits a continuous rapid beeping (I'd even wager this is the most common type in homes). This listener is looking for T3 pattern for smoke (three long beeps followed by a pause, repeated), or T4 pattern (four short beeps, pause, repeated) for CO. I talked to two Ring support techs and neither one knew the detail on T3/T4 temporal patterns. The listener gets "confused" by the continuous beeping and reports T4/CO was heard during setup and won't (didn't) trigger during actual alarm event. This listener product should be updated to detect continuous beeping and either be able to alarm on it or report the incompatibility. Techs should have been trained on the T3/T4 pattern details, and know what to listen for on customer calls.
