How to Rebuild Ford V-8 Engines

Currently I sing this book for a 390 complete build, used a separate book for for a 302 by Tom Monroe, and his manuals are without a doubt the finest collection of information and procedures ever written outlining an engine build. Forget the glossy “blueprint build books” (crap) sold by Jegs or Summit. This is the real deal for someone to actually get the job done from opening the hood and beginning the process to timing the ignition at the end.

First off, I have never rebuilt an engine by myself. I watched my cousin step through the process years ago, and recall very little of the process. I just remember the effort he put in. Well, I decided I would give this a try since I had just bought my '79 f150 4x4. The truck came with a knocking motor, and when I debated on the cost of a rebuilt vs rebuilding the one I had, I figured what the heck. The worst that could happen is I was out some time and effort + money. Sometimes, you just gotta take that risk in life. That's a motto I will always stand by.So you know I was completely new to engine rebuilds, and honestly, I didn't even know the name of some of the internal parts, such as the lifters, rocker arms, push rods, mains, etc. Let me say, after going through the step by step process with this book leading me all along, I not only built a strong 400, but also learned the engine inside and out. If you are a do-it-yourselfer, but this book! It was such a great help, I couldn't possibly recommend it more.I tried rating the book 100 stars, but Amazon only allows the 5 - not good enough! This book deserves at least another 95!

I saw that this book had great reviews & picked it up in hopes it would help me rebuild my '86 302. Unfortunately this book does not cover that motor size, nor does it cover motors that new.It is a fantastic reference manual & it has a lot of great information & pictures. It has all of the tolerances, clearances, ect you need for building a motor. It also walks you through step-by-step on how to diagnose problems & what steps to take to fix them. It doesn't cover the 302 so it doesn't have the motor's specs, but you can use it as a manual & find the specs on the internet.I'm glad to have added this book to my "reference library".

This book has a lot of information in it. You have to dig through it to find the torque specification. I found a web site with a PDF for the specs and down loaded it.

Great amount of help to ID parts and processes in rebuilding my 1978 Ford F-250 351M-400 engine. Best book I have ever owned on the subject. Ordered my own copy for my automotive library.

Great book, for the rebuilding of the Ford V* engines. This had a lot of the measurements needed and values to put the motor back together.

I have always felt that," more is better." The more information that is available the better informed you should be. This is part of my automotive library for my Bronco.

Very outdated pjotos makae me wonder about the text. A little reading sheds a little light on is age. No mention of modern fixes to the 351 engine shortcomungs. No Powerheads, no matched cam kits. I would recommend this book to someone rebuilding, not much on performamce

Very happy with this book I am building a 351 Cleveland engine. This will help me with lots of the specs very happy highly recommend.

Was a great book to reference when rebuilding my 460. Torque specs are there you just have to read the section referencing the parts you install. No summary page with torque specs.

Book is great wish it had more diagrams but other then that it has the info i needed.
