Modern, in 1886
Excellent book for anyone designing steam engines. Since the time period that the book was written was at the pinnacle of steam engine design, everything is just as relevant today as it was then. The only steam engine designs that weren't in the book were uniflow and turbine engines, both of which were developed after the book was written.I purchased the book to help me design a small, efficient, engine to use for a solar-electric application. It certainly allowed me to make the proper calculations, concerning boiler to engine size to expected power output.Highly recommended!

I am not an engineer
Great for reference, but not a book that is easy to understand. It seem to be written for engineers - vector analysis, etc. etc. It offers solid mathematical analysis of seemingly most every aspect of a steam engine, not subjective opinion like some other books of the same era.
