Handmade paper in India goes as far a 3rd century BC, it has been practiced by craftsmen known as "kagzi's" which means paper. Most of them dwindled over the years; however some of them are settled in Sanganer, a place in Jaipur, Rajasthan in 16 century the ruler of amber King Ram Singh brought them to Sanganer. The royalty used handmade paper for official documents, calligraphy. The process of handmade paper starts with making cotton waste to pulp, the pulp is than diluted with water and put in a masonry, which is than taken out with the help of lifting mould, roses and flower petals are added to the pulp, before transferring it to large tanks, the pulp is taken out in trays and pressed to drive out the water, it reduces the weight of the sheet ,any dirt on the sheet is removed manually ,the cleaned sheets are given coating with starch to improve the quality of paper and prevent feathering ,the sheets are peeled of the muslin , and dried in the sunlight to remove any moisture, the dried paper is passed through a series of metal roll, which provides the paper smoothness and glossy surface.
