Good reference book
This is a good book for beginner to intermediate and maybe even for some Advanced players. It's spiral balance with lies flat also they are photographs of fingers on the fretboard as well as diagrams of the cord also there are variations for each cord. It's a good resource for those learning to play are for making sure that you have a cord done exactly right!

Great Reference Book
This book is a great reference, and the photos of the hand positions are very helpful. That is the reason that I purchased this book. Unfortunately, one of the pages was crumpled and does not lay flat. It was too much trouble to send back for an exchange so I just kept it.

Best for all levels
I bought this for my nephew who just got his first guitar. I was so happy that they are still making these books because I had this EXACT one when I first started playing almost 20 years ago! I still use it to this day. Any and every chord and all the different variations of them can be found in this book. I've kept up with my playing all this time and I still find this book extremely helpful when writing music. I HIGHLY recommend for beginners and even for intermediate players.

When learning the guitar most โguitar tutorโ books teach out โKiddy Chordsโ โ most of which are played on the bottom three frets and sound โmuddyโ due to the over-bass โvoicingโ of the chords โ and many of the chords are of no use whatsoever if you wish to seriously get to grips with the guitar much beyond strumming folk tunes. Whilst โKiddy Chordsโ are easy to learn, they seriously hamper your playing so the trick is to throw out the โKiddy Chordsโ and learn โproperโ chord voicings โ you will be so glad that you took the trouble to do so. So if you really wish to get out of the โrutโ of boring โfour-chordโ songs, and broaden the scope of your guitar playing then get yourself a copy of โThe Gig Bag Book of Guitar Picture Chordsโ (one of the brilliant โGig Bagโ series of books). Here you will find 1,100 chords with great โvoicingsโ that instantly make you โsoundโ like a pro as well as close up photos showing you the "best" way of fingering the chords. And if you want to hear how these โvoicingsโ sound then go on YouTube and seek out Tracy Kimโs โteach-inโ where you will learn to play Django Reinhardtโs โNuagesโ (clouds). But why stop there! The โImp guitar cardโ is a BRILLIANT '"credit card" sized aid to speed up mastering the guitar like a pro. What the FRONT (heads) side of Imp guitar card does for you is show you all of the notes on the fretboard - but with the sharp and flat notes removed so that you can quickly see and get to grips with the repeating note patterns. This enables you to swiftly see where to put your fingers to construct ANY scale and ANY chord and โarrangeโ the structure of the chord in ANY โvoicingโ (called โarrangingโ) โ and not be entrapped in โprescriptiveโ chord sequences that are about as much use as a chocolate teapot. You will instantly see that the notes B and C on one string are adjacent to the E-F notes on the next highest string. For example, the notes on the low E string at the 7th and 8th frets are B-C, and the notes on the A string at the 7th and 8th frets are E-F. These four notes form a distinctive โboxโ pattern, which is repeated in different places all over the fretboard and once you know the position of these four โboxโ notes, you can quickly work out the position of the other three notes in the scale. Use the Imp guitar card to seek them out and learn their positions. ASIDE: The exception to this is on the G to B string โprogressionโ. Because of the way the guitar is โtunedโ, the E-F notes are shifted one fret higher than the B-C notes on the G string โ which creates a โdiamondโ shaped โboxโ. But it gets even better On the โtailsโ side of the Imp guitar card we have the main chords for every โscale noteโ (called scale tone triads) in EVERY music key โ how good is THAT! What this means is that you not only have the CORRECT chord for every โnoteโ of ANY song in ANY particular key, you also have the ability to INSTANTLY TRANSPOSE to any OTHER key to suit the โvoicesโ of the accompanying singers and instruments simply by โlooking upโ the chords on the chart in their relative โpositionsโ โ and not be trapped in โprescriptiveโ chord sequences that never sound quite โrightโ when you play them. ASIDE: Transposition is essentially playing the same chord โprogressionโ (e.g. the sequence โI-IV-I-IV-I-V-IV-Iโ is a 12-bar blues โprogressionโ) but in a different โkeyโ (pitch) โ which will have a different โsoundโ and โfeelโ because of the harmonic structures. Seven โpleasingโ chords are shown for each โnoteโ of each โkeyโ. These seven chords are built on the seven notes of the major scale โ also called the โtonic sol fahโ (doh ray me) scale. The chords given are constructed using the โScale Tone Triadsโ of that key โ that is to say - for any given note the โscale tone chordsโ are formed by taking each note in turn as the โrootโ note, then adding the note two places up on the Major scale โ and then repeating the formula on โthatโ note to obtain the โtriadโ (3 note chord). To illustrate - in the key of C, the seven notes of the major scale are C-D-E-F-G-A-B. The scale tone chords are formed by taking each note in turn as the โrootโ note then adding the note two places up on the Major scale - so - the first scale tone chord has C note as its โrootโ - and two places up adds an E note. Two places up from E adds a G note. This is the โC Majorโ โtriadโ chord. The second scale tone chord has D as its โroot noteโ and two places up adds F, Two places up from F adds A. This is a D minor โtriadโ chord. The third scale tone chord has E as its โroot noteโ and two places up adds G, Two places up from G adds B. This is the โE minorโ triad (this also creates a โC major seventhโ โ which is a nice โsubstituteโ for Em) โ and so on. For every key, three major chords, three minor chords and one diminished chord are given - so for the key of C, the chord names shown along the top line of the table are: C โ Dm โ Em โ F โ G โ Am โ Bยฐ Where C, F and G are Major chords. D, E and A are minor chords, and Bยฐ is a diminished chord. The chord built on the seventh note of the major scale is a bit of an oddball. This is a โdiminishedโ chord, referred to here as VIIยฐ. In the key of C, this is Bยฐ (or Bdim). The diminished chord is an โextendedโ chord that adds extra notes to the basic triad to form an โexoticโ chord. Exotic chords add the seventh, ninth, eleventh, and thirteenth notes of the scale to the basic triads. Try playing chords such as โB flat minor add 9โ (Bbm add9), or โD minor seven flat 5โ (Dm7 b5) and hear your โmusicalityโ open up. The โexoticsโ add โdramaโ and โcolourโ to the music but they are not popular because having โtrainedโ the fingers to perform the โKiddy Chordsโ such chords are then tricky to play by the average person โ even though they are just as โeasyโ to play โ and sound fabulous. Armed with the book AND the Imp guitar card, your playing ability will truly soar! Happy performing
