Artur Rubinstein in Concert - Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Schubert

When I first played this dvd, I was so disappointed with the muddy sound, I just threw it in a drawer for a couple of weeks. It was hard to imagine that Max Wilcox, who engineered many wonderful CDs had anything to do with it! I have a feeling that the expansive acoustics of the Concertgebouw might be a little too expansive when there is no audience present. But after some further tweaking (such as turning the bass down almost all the way, and boosting highs)the sound is pretty good. And BTW, I'm not new to this - most other 70's dvds on DG (like Karajan, Bernstein, Pollini)have much better sound.) But this dvd has such wonderful artists, who have few dvds available, it really is a good acquisition (just remember to adjust the sound!)

I own almost all the DVDs you can find on amazon's site where Rubinstein plays and this is my favourite (the Russia Recital is also a must have), however the sound and video quality make this so special. The orchestra is really amazing, if you have a decent home theather you'll enjoy this even more!If you like good music and have special affection about Rubinstein, you'll find this really special!

these performances are superb, sound quality is excellent in the music, but in the extra 90 minnit special it is muffled and difficult to listen to. some EQ would have helped a lot.

Didn't show enough of his hands some of the time, camera tended to look above the keyboard.... Odd. I would have liked to have seen his hands through a lot of those passages. But I loved the Brahms, which is why I got this DVD.

Wonderful music and performance. Video and audio quality are outstanding. There are a few shortcomings, but they have to be tolerated. Hopefully there will be another release in the future aimed at pianists who would like to be able to observe some clues as to how the great master executed some of those difficult passages. In this one we are entertained by views of the organ pipes (aren't they beautiful!) and the highlights off the bassoon, and other such distractions. Yes, I would rather be observing the performance, but I am delighted to have this one in my collection. Highly recommended.

Rubinstein, con 86 años (1973), visita el Concertgebouw, sin público, para grabar estos conciertos.En el 3º de Beethoven da la impresión que Rubinstein se sienta al piano para interpretar a Chopin con partitura de Beethoven. No mira a Haitink más de dos o tres veces durante toda la interpretación; él va a lo suyo. Haitink y el Concertgebouw, pues le acompañan, para eso estaban allí. Aún así nos encontramos con un bonito concierto, cálido, lírico diría. Llama la atención la excelente forma en la que se encuentra Rubinstein a esa edad. Cumple perfectamente, y es una delicia escuchar ese sonido suyo tan característico. Haitink, como era de esperar, dirige con maestría, con oficio, y la Royal Concertgebouw espléndida.Creo, igual que el otro comentarista, que en el Primero de Brahms, suben el listón. Aparecen auténticas sonoridades brahmsianas. Se percibe algún intercambio de miradas entre ambos. El drama se va creando. Se entra realmente en la esencia de la obra. Sorprende la entrega del anciano pianista. Verle con esa cara avejentada introducirse con devoción y máxima entrega en los pentagramas produce un enorme placer.Chopin y Schubert igualmente excelentes.¡Qué anciano tan joven!La imagen es muy buena. Existen innumerables conciertos en DVD, de los años ochenta (década siguiente) con bastante peor imagen que esta, y, curiosamente, grabados también por Unitel. El sonido se puede calificar de notable alto. Tal vez en el concierto de Brahms tenga demasiada presencia, lo que repercute en la transparencia de la sonoridad, resultando algo agresiva.Este DVD es de obligada adquisición. Uno de los últimos testimonios de uno de los grandes pianistas del siglo XX, y en unas condiciones técnicas excelentes.Imagen: 4:3. Sonido: Stereo, DTS 5.1.

Me ha sorprendido el cierto hieratismo de Rubinstein, que no pestañea en su espléndida interpretación. Los 'tempos' de los condiertos son muy buenos y nada precipitados. Bernard Haitink acompaña con eficiencia y buen ritmo al piano y, en conjunt, se logra una versión muy buena de esos conciertos, de los que destacaría el de Brahms. En cuanto a las piezas pianísticas de Schubert y Chopin, Rubinstein hace una interpretación espléndida, como correponde a su legendaria fama como pianista en especial romántico-Altamente recomendable para todo buen aficionado a las grandes interpretaciones de corte clásico.

Es un excelente DVD por muy buen precio. No pude resistirme a ver en concierto a Rubinstein, un magnífico pianista, ya histórico, interpretando algunos de mis conciertos favoritos.Bernar Haitink y la Filarmónica de Berlín quedan en un segundo plano, acompañan al maestro, no hace falta más.Para todos los amantes del piano.
