Best of Mercedes Sosa

Very soothing and melodic music would highly recommend

I recently discovered Argentinian singer, Mercedes Sosa (1935-2009), when I saw a YouTube video of her singing “Gracias a la Vida” with Joan Baez. I fell in love with her voice and her embracing presence as I viewed more videos of her singing. I HAD to have some of her music to listen to whenever I wanted. That is why I bought this album, entitled “The Best of Mercedes Sosa.”The album contains a good, representative selection of Mercedes singing various styles of songs, from the happy, energetic “Y Dale Alegría a Mi Corazón” (you’ll clap and sing along with her when the chorus comes in) to the slower, haunting “Yo Vengo a Ofrecer Mi Corazón” (with a male vocalist). Whatever the track, her voice is clear and engaging. Some tracks feature simple guitar, flute, and drum accompaniment; one has a piano, a couple have an orchestra. My favorites are the more traditional folk treatments, though the whole album is growing on me as I listen to it repeatedly.My absolute favorite track is “Toda Cambia” (Everything Changes). This song is timeless, and especially appropriate for the state of the world today. I would buy the album for this track alone. Mercedes also offers a slower version of “Gracias a la Vida,” which imparts a thoughtfulness to the lyrics. Another favorite is “Sólo le Pido a Dios.” I can’t help rocking in my chair and singing along to this one as well. The only cut that hasn’t enchanted me yet is the operatic “Los Mareados.” Once or twice I had to readjust the volume on an upcoming song, a consequence of compiling tracks from different earlier albums.Overall, I give this album 5 stars. I have been very happy with the selection of songs, and of course, the exposure to more of Mercedes Sosa’s singing from her heart, straight to my soul.

I had no idea who this wonderful singer is when I heard a song at the Montevideo hotel breakfast room. Fell in love with her voice, ordered this CD via Amazon Smile and have enjoyed this CD immensely since.

I only recently heard of Mercedes Sosa. I bought my first cd just to see how good or bad it was. I was so surpised when I first listened to her voice, the lyrics, the pasion and compassion she had for the human race. Soon after I got the first one I bought 3 more of her cd's-----and I'm still enjoying them.

This voice is haunting yet happy. I don't understand a word she is singing but I love to put this on and appreciate another country and their gifts. Her voice is a gift.

She's widely known in South America. In Canada, hardly known -- but she is a wonderful discovery for those who do find her strong emotional performances.
