Will detect a lighter a foot away!
Works great, way better than the soapy water trick. Does take a little bit to warm up and tricky to learn and use for the first couple times. I love it, tots worth the $10 I spent on it.

Neither useful as a detector, nor as an alarm.
I was hoping to get gas detector that would help me to find where my LPG stove leaks and ideal to be able to use it as an alarm. However, this product does neither. I tested it with my camping stove: I turn on the stove without lighting it. I would need to put the detector really close to the stove to be able to detect any gas. I could smell the gas all over the room and the detector would not alarm unless being put less than an inch or two away from the stove. Besides, in practice the reaction time of 6s is really long if you want to use this to find where the LPG leaks from - you would need to move the detector supper slowly around the gas plumbing, hoping that it will detect anything. Even your bare nose would do much better in finding leaks, not even talking about soap water that helps you to find the leak at no cost almost instantly.Perhaps this tool might work as an alarm - although it is not sensitive, I believe it is sensitive enough to alarm before the concentration of the gas is high enough for combustion. The problem is that the tool keeps beeping loud every 6s to indicate its operating, so you don't really want it to be on unless you are actively using it.

It works great. It detected a minor leak at a connection point. This is what I was looking for !

Worth the peace of mind.
I tested it with a butane lighter then checked my gas appliances and service. I have no sense of smell so it is my nose and gives me peace of mind. Well worth the price.

works but not what I was looking for
It works but I was looking of something that could pinpoint a leak.. There is a delay in the response so it will tell you if there is a leak but to use it to pinpoint a leak is impossible.

Works like a charm
Works like a charm. The plumbing company that installed my hot water tank made four trips to my home and were unable to find the obvious gas leak. Of course their technology was "Soap and Water", and they failed miserably. The Gas Company came out and verified my concerns. I ordered this device and called the plumbing company a fifth time. I place this little device in the general area of the leak and "Presto", leak found and repaired. Needless to say the plumbers were embarrassed of their failure to find and repair the leak that they caused. I advised them to have their boss order and place one of these devices in each toolbox.

Not very sensitive
This review is for both the General Tools and Instruments PNG1, and the Mastech MS6310.I was looking for a detector to find a leak in the propane system on my RV.Conclusion: In my testing, the Mastech was easier to use, quicker to respond, and much more sensitive. In my opinion, The Mastech MS6310 is worth the extra $13 when it comes to the safety issues and cost associated with gas leaks. Read on for details....GT&I PNG1: This device came in a nice retail blister pack with 2 AA batteries and had readable directions. It seems to be made of decent quality plastic for standard handyman and home use, but is definitely not a tradesman's quality product. In testing, It was easy to use, but slow to respond, so the leak detection was a slow process. On the first day of testing there was no breeze outside, and it detected only one of 3 leaks. on the second day with a 4MPH breeze, it couldn't detect even the larger leak. I returned this product for refund.Mastech MS6310: This device came in a nice retail box, but obviously is targeting the Chinese market and was covered with Chinese characters. The box contained the unit, a carrying case, and instructions, but did not include batteries. The instructions were readable, but had the common spelling/word errors of a Chinese product. The quality of the unit itself was fine for handyman and home use. Performance wise, this gas detector was far superior to the PNG1. The Mastech almost instantaneously alarmed near leaks, and found 2 addition very small leaks that the PNG1 couldn't detect even when I knew where they were. It also detected all 3 leaks even in a 4MPH breeze. The unit has a sensitivity knob that you adjust until the tone stops, so if there is residual gas in the area you can reduce the sensitivity to find the leak location. I kept this product for future use.Note: Both units require a couple minute warm up time for maximum sensitivity.

Sensitivity issues.
Either it isn't working correctly, or it is just not sensitive enough to be useful. I tested it on my gas stove and gas fireplace. Even though the burner was not lit, it never detected the obvious gas flow. I turned on our log lighter and let the gas run. After about a minute it finally alarmed. I was alarmed as there was a great deal of gas in the firebox.
