Not super detailed but self evident directions
A fun book that has good examples and patterns and pretty much assumes that most have a knowledge of sharpening and cuts.

Excellent starting book for carving
This book provides lots of plans and very good instructions for those starting to carve figures. It also has some excellent directions and instructions on painting and sealing those that you have completed. While detailed instructions are only provided with one figure, with a little thought the approach can be applied to the other figures. As an improvement it would have been nice for the follow on figures to provide a general approach to each figure, e.g., hat first, block nose, rough pants, etc. It would be a big help to us beginners. With respect to paint colors, I would forgo the "flesh" color that the author recommends and just leave the flesh colored surfaces natural wood. The natural wood color looks much better when sealed. BTW - To use these plans effectively you really need a band saw with a 3 inch opening. Instead of making templates for each figure, I just a copy of the plan, cut out the front facing figure, use spray contact cement to adhere it to the wood blank, and cut it out. Then double side tape the cuts off back on, flip the blank 90 degrees, and glue on the side view of the pattern, and then cut that.

long delivery time
The book is generally good, but the pictures are not very clear as to to what is being done. Didn't realize where the book was coming from and delivery was very long.

Moving right along
May not be Tutorial for beginners, but part of the fun is whimsical creativity. The internet is tutoring, stop and rewind the videos, after you do a few lil folk, you get a little better at whittling/carving, and look at the book, you wouldn't use it that much once you learn the basics anyway. good to make changes to the patterns. I don't have a band saw, so I'll take longer to rough out the blocks of wood. The basswood blocks are great for practice and the sizes are just about right.

Makes a nice Hobby for men who like wood. working.
I bought this as a gift for my elderly father who enjoys working with wood. An of course I bought the other things that go along with this Hobby. He enjoys this book says its very helpful to understand and has actually accomplish some of the figurines in book they came out very nicely. I only recommend for those who can follow the instructions can be a little complicated so you would have to have a person who is somewhat experience with wood carving or wood work.
