Gach Sgeul - Every Story

Gach Sgeul Should Be Heard
Julie Fowlis' fourth studio album is surely her best yet. Gach Sgeul is a beautiful mixture of love songs and lullabies, fast and slow, tales of old and new, all of which are sung in Julie's native tongue. Danns' A Luideagan Odhar, Smeorach Chlann Domhnaill, Cadal Ciarach Mo Luran, Ribinnean Riomhach and Siud Thu 'Ille Ruiadh Ghallain are the best examples of this lovely musical tapestry. There is music to suit all moods on this album. Julie once again proves that music speaks to the heart.

Highly recommended album.
I bought this in preparation for seeing Julie Fowlis in concert this year as artists usually play a lot of material from their latest album. Both the concert and the album were excellent. Some of the best new music I have heard for years. I found some of the songs needed a few listens to get them - but these turned out to be my favourites. It is remarkable that almost 10 years into her recording career, Julie and her husband Éamonn Doorley are still creating music this fresh and original. Lets hope they continue.

Beautiful and relaxing Album. Buy it!
This is my first experience of Julie Fowlis and I am not disappointed. Her voice is excellent and entirely in keeping with her chosen genre. The songs are all Scottish gaelic folksongs and it matters not that I don't understand a word. The sound and the melody of the backing with Julie's own voice make it a really pleasant and relaxing listen. I am sure I will add more to my collection in future.

Magical music
Sublime. Reminds me of Sissel a bit. Doesn't matter if you don't understand the language. When Enya sings in Irish or Sissel in Norwegian it just makes their voices sound all the more magical and that is what I found with this album. A big thank you to Nicola Benedetti for getting Julie to guest on her latest album otherwise I may never have discovered her.

Superb
JF, together with Karen Matheson, is the pre-eminent Gaelic singer today. This recording fully exhibits her talent in her field. Love every track.

Another Excellent Album
If you like the other music produced by Julie Fowlis, I would highly recommend this, her latest album. As with her other music, the combination of the interesting Gaelic songs with a stunning voice makes it a pleasure to listen to, and yet the album is unique in that it is different from the work that she has produced so far. It is well worth a listen.

Scotland Rules
Production values are high on Julie's songs, and she delivers beautifully. Only downside is the small number of tracks, and the downbeat feel to most of the numbers. The Gaelic (which we don't understand) is probably all to the good, as the lyrics when translated can sound rather trite.

Beautiful Scottish Gaelic singing
Ms. Fowlis is an accomplished singer in Gaelic. She has a voice that you want to listen to even if you do not understand Gaelic. She is also an expert in playing the tin whistle. I needed to add this to my music library.

As good as expected
I bought this cd because I love Julie Fowlis, and have loved her other cd's as well. I've only listened to this new cd a couple of times, but I knew right away I was right to buy it. I just love her voice, the melodies, and of course the Gallic language songs. This cd has more other instrumentation than her other ones, and I like that - for example, an accordion with a wonderful rhythm in one song. I am a huge fan of Celtic music to begin with, have been for years - I am Irish-American. But in listening to Celtic music over the years, I found that often Scottish music is actually my favorite. The Scots just seem genetically programmed to make good music - and plenty of it! I also like Old Blind Dogs, especially their first recordings. I like traditional Celtic music that feels authentic to me in some way, and I feel that Julie's music fits this bill. There is great appeal in her music - voice, melody, lyrics, instrumentation - but I feel there is something else there - something from long ago, that is deeper than surface appeal. I also like Iarla O Lioniard, the Irish sean nos singer, for the same reason. I would recommend this music to anyone who loves Celtic music, both traditional and contemporary - it is just great music!

An amazing Lady
If you are looking here you are aware of the amazing Julie Fowlis. I have purchased everything I can find that she has done or is a part of. She sings to me in the car and as I work in my shop. I cannot understand a word she says in her native tongue(s), but I have found that to be refreshing. I am not responsible for the lyrics and can genuinely appreciate her vocal ability, the instrumentation and ponder at the history and circumstances in which these songs were created. Thank you , Julie for what you do and for sharing your heritage.

Finally clicked
This is the second Julie Fowlis album I've bought. The first one I bought I was lukewarm about, and filed it away. A year later, I pulled it back out, and it clicked. Now I can't imagine how I didn't fall immediately in love with Julie Fowlis. No such delay with this one.
