Pearls Sells Out: A Pearls Before Swine Treasury (Volume 12)

An absolutely invaluable tool when dealing with Asperger’s Syndrome
What is it about Pearls Before Swine? Irreverent. Poorly-drawn. Often ridiculous. Too many puns. Sometimes not even funny. And yet this is one of the best comic strips still being produced. When it hits its mark, it really hits its mark. Pig and Rat are standouts. I don’t much care for any storyline that involves the croc family. My daughter absolutely loves loves loves Pearl Before Swine, which has become disproportionately important in our lives. My daughter is on the autism spectrum, and when she has an Aspie Meltdown that she just can not recover from, I hand her one of these books. The transformation is immediate, and within a minute or two she is in her room howling with laughter instead of being in the throes of a meltdown. Distraction is a wonderful thing. And no, she is not manipulating me. This is literally my very last line of defense, the last resort I turn to when all else has failed. No other book has ever had this effect. Just Pearls Before Swine. As you can imagine, I have bought EVERY Pearls Before Swine book. We are down to our last two, but fortunately now the Aspie Meltdowns are few and far between. Still, Stephan Pastis, hurry and churn out more, please! :)

Stephan Pastis is one of the funniest comics out there!
I have been a Pearls fan for some time now. I started collecting all the books (BLT's Taste So Darn Good, Nighthogs, This Little Piggy Stayed Home, etc) but it wasn't until I read my first treasury, Sgt Piggy's Lonely Hearts Club Comic, that I realized just how funny Mr. Pastis can be. His added comments at the bottom of most strips are often funnier than the strip itself. I highly recommend that anyone who is a fan of the strip check out the treasuries if only to read the author's added explanations and hilarious notes. Another great feature of the treasuries (beginning with Lions and Tigers and Crocs, Oh My! and The Crass Menagerie) is the "withdrawn" or pulled strips and the un-edited strips that are featured in the back of the books. You will laugh your @$$ off!

Very funny stuff!
More than just tons of hilarious strips! This treasury includes commentary from the artist on nearly half of the strips. Some are interesting tidbits of how he thought up the strip, others are comments about the reaction that some of the "edgy" strips received when they ran nationally. There is also a section in the back of the book called "Stuff You've Never Seen", which includes alternate versions of strips that never ran for various reasons. All in all, Pearls Before Swine is one of the funniest strips around today and this treasury is a fine collection. One thing about Pearls though, it's kind of rated PG. If you like to let your kids read the funnies for the wholesome entertainment you may want to read through this book before they do.

Just what you expected...
This collection of 'Pearls Before Swine' comics is just that, if you enjoy the comic in the newspaper, or check it often at [...], you'll enjoy the collection. If you don't like the comic, then you probably won't. For anyone who hasn't read the comic, it features a cast of various anthropomorphised animals (Pastis actually made a few strips poking fun at that idea) and their interactions. The Crocodiles, a bunch of incompetant predators ala Wile Coyote, are just as popular to strip readers as Pig, a sort of Ziggy-like character, Rat, the egocentric fellow that many of us would be if we could get away with it, and Goat, the intellectual fellow we all like to imagine we are. If you enjoy 'Dilbert' or 'Get Fuzzy', there's a pretty good chance you'll enjoy the humor of Pearls Before Swine'.

Great comic
Love Pearls Before Swine. Great to read the little insights and quips he adds to the book.

Pearls Sells Out: A Pearls Before Swine Treasury
Every day, I look forward to reading my absolute all-time favorite comic strip, Pearls Before Swine. Stephan Pastis' twisted sense of humor and love of puns mirrors my thinking processes so closely it's scary. This book contains a representative collection of hilarious strips from the past. It's best read from front to back to follow the creator's reasonong and motivation, thoughtfully provided in narrative anecdotes on most pages. Once you start, it's hard to put down. This was the first collection I've purchased. I intend to buy more of these gems. Go Pig!

My favorite collection of my favorite comics
Pearls Before Swine is the best. The off-beat, sometimes dark humor is so much funnier than most of the other stuff on the comic page.Note that this is a 'collection' which means it contains the contents of other, smaller books. The collections also have great commentary by Stephan Pastis (I'm not sure if the individual books do, I only have the collections).I have three of the collections, and I think this one is my favorite, but they are all great.

Pastis does it again
Pearls Before Swine's latest treasury is another gem from the creatively warped mind of Stephan Pastis. Although all the strips have been seen before in either the papers or other books, Stephan's comments are worth the small price you pay to buy this book. In addition to the regular strips there is an interesting section with strips that were not run for various reasons or alternate versions of strips that did run. Here's where Stephan's comments are most interesting. Strips that he thought weren't funny..... I laughed at, (so who's the warped mind now?).If you're already a PBS fan, buy the book, if you're not a PBS fan buy it anyway to find out what the fans already know; Pearls Rocks!
