The Appreciative Advising Revolution

Good information
I purchased this book because I was taking the Appreciative Advising course. There were a few nuggets I got from the book. This book could be a great resource for new professionals or for professionals that may be struggling in the performance area. I liked how each chapter starts with the explanation of the chapter, and then goes in to example situations.

Great Book
Book is a great read I am thoroughly enjoying that. The reason for the 3 star rating is because of the way the book printed on some pages the words become light and difficult to read closer to the spine.

it was a great resource and I drew on it really heavily
I was assigned with creating a 45-hour in-house training to certify employees in our department (the student coaching division for a university with an enrollment of 30,000) in Academic Coaching. While I didn't use everything out of this book, it was a great resource and I drew on it really heavily. The theoretical model is a good one for framing an academic coaching/advising session, and the book offers good self-reflection questions, as well as questions that advisors can ask students.

Finally a book to change College Academic Advising
For years academic advising had been about numbers (who can see the most students) or about graduation rates (which department finished the most) but today we have a different type of student, adults. Therefore, our advising techniques must change. Appreciative advising is a mindset shift that moves you from cookie cutter sessions to personalized empowerment discussions. In this book you will learn to intentionally use positive, active, and attentive listening and questioning strategies to build trust and rapport with students (Disarm); uncover students' strengths and skills based in their past successes (Discover); encourage and be inspired by students' stories and dreams (Dream); co-construct action plans with students to make their goals a reality (Design); support students as they carry out their plans (Deliver); and challenge both themselves and their students to do and become even better (Deliver). The authors present the theory that will uniquely challenge your practice in this highly entertaining book.
