Big House, Little House, Back House, Barn: The Connected Farm Buildings of New England

I just purchased the "20th Anniversary edition" of Hubka's excellent 1984 book, and I wish I could return it. Instead I'd buy a used copy of the 1984 edition. There are office copier machines that do a better job preserving the tonality of b/w photos than this new edition with the color photos on the cover. I'm comparing pages, side by side: There's significant loss of detail in the darks, so architectural details such as doors are just...gone. Digital is not the answer to everything.

If you are buying a farmhouse or interested in the history of them this book is terrific. It explains how the farmhouses came to have these additions that I always thought was random, but it’s not. Lots of good photos from early farmhouses in Maine and New England.

Book Exactly how I remember it. Very good pictures etc. I did buy a used copy but it looks brand new. My ex-husband home that he grew up in throughout this book. It is now a keepsake for my son

Overall, it's an OK book for info on these rambling New England homes. I dislike the fact that it has no color photos of houses, and in fact has very few photos at all. Mainly dry, boring text.

This book has some interesting stories about houses that are unique to this area of the country. I especially liked this book because it features a homestead that has been in my family since it was built. This is a good book to read about the development of the concept of the Big House, Little House, Back House, Barn where all the elements are connected.
