Ad Astra: 20 Years of Newspaper Ads for Sci-Fi & Fantasy Films

A tremendous time capsule
If you liked the author's other books on horror then this volume is a must. A tremendous walk down the newspaper memory lane. One turn of the page and I suddenly remember a movie or movie poster of a film I haven't thought about in over 30 years. Wow. Some of the best entertainment I've had all year. One critique for the author, some of the posters/documents you have a picture of are too small to read. For example, the terminology sheet for Dune. Why not enlarge that picture and shrink another? There a few other similar pictures that could have been enlarged or shrunk to maximize enjoyment. Please keep these books coming. Perhaps, the next series is on action movies? 70s horror movies?

The Past through the Pages
Got this for my brother for Christmas after seeing it in an email. We grew up in the early 90s and have vivid memories of wishing and planning we could watch movies in the theaters or drive ins. When we couldn't we looked in our newspapers and looked at the posters of the films that were out and coming out. It was awesome, and from time to time we could convince our parents or older sister to take us to a movie. This book has some of those, if not all of them. It's a great way to see how good and bad films were marketed in the past. We sure are old now. This is a great little book with a lot of cool old movie posters and ads. Thanks for making the book, making it affordable, and giving us a glimpse into the past. Highly recommended!

Gingold Strikes Again! (This time with Sci-Fi and Fantasy!)
Michael Gingold and 1984 Publishing are back at it! This time tackling the worlds of sci-fi and fantasy! Ad Astra is every bit as enjoyable and important as it's predecessor, Ad Nauseam. Chronicling 20 years of print ads for many of the films that formed us, it really is, once again, a trip back to a much different time, a time in cinema advertising that is sorely missed by many of us. Check with mission control, stay clear of Klyytus and the Bore Worms, take the advice of yer most trusted wizard, crack this beauty open and reach for the stars! You are going to love it! Mr. Gingold wins again, and 1984 Publishing gives us another, in what I hope is a long line, of perfectly put together "must-haves" for our home libraries!

'80s and '90s Sci-Fi Glory.
I thought that I was the only one that cut ads from newspapers! But who kept them? Apparently only the author here. '80s and '90s sci-fi/fantasy is all its glory. Gingold's written summaries are a lot of fun, as are the (mostly scathing and hilarious) reviews. This is a giant dive into the two decades. Back to the Future and Star Trek and Return of the Jedi -- check. But the true gold for me are long-forgotten ads like Heartbeeps (Andy Kaufman!), The Incredible Shrinking Woman (Lily Tomlin!), and Mac and Me (McDonald's!).

Great trip down memory lane.
A night laid out, fun trip down memory lane. I used to clip and collect these ads! The only downer? It reminded me of how much I didn't like Rex Reed, one of the worst movie reviewers of all time. A mean spirited little man who liked virtually nothing. But the book itself is great.

Great book, like a time capsule
Nostalgic to say the least! As a child I remember looking for and seeing all a lot of these ads from the late 80's in the newspapers. It's a really great book and lovely to have this time capsule of information collated.Sit back enjoy, flick through and remember the good/fantastic times.

A trip through nostalgia
The book is a compilation of newspaper ads for science fiction & fantasy films in New York newspapers, organized by year from 1980-1999. If you've seen the films, it's great to look back and see the posters; if you haven't, you might find a title that interests you – but the information is scant. Only some of the films get selected review quotes, and some of the posters are too dark or too small to see accurately. It's essentially a coffee table book for fans of those films… and if you love movies in this genre, you'll adore this book on your table.
