Poetry, history, art -- Wonderful
You have to be in the right mood -- long, imagerial descriptions intertwined with botanical musings. Imaginary place names (she explains this). In the wrong mood, it can be tedious; in the right mood, mystical and wondrous.

Unique text with modern photos of timeless land.
Captions are often hard to read against busy photo background.Text from early 20th C is poetic, literary and observant. A treasure. Might rather have the Ansel Adams photos from what I understand is the original.

Early 1900 historical account of life in the Mojave Desert
The text of the book was first published in 1903. Mary Hunter Austin was a highly regarded female writer in her day. One can glean a sense of what the Mojave desert area was like in the early nineteen hundreds. She was highly interested in the Shoshone and Paiute Indians as well as the Pocket Hunters in the Death Valley region. The photographs by Walter Feller, a modern day photographer, enhance the text greatly.

BEAUTIFUL!!!!
Walter Feller is my older brother. He has always displayed a fantastic artistic talent. I am amazed by his photography in this book. It brings together God's beauty and man's ability to honor his works.
