The Dragon Heir

Book 3 is great, stop here. Books 4/5 are a road to disappointment.
You can tell that the series was originally written as a trilogy. Books 4 and 5 are glommed on as an afterthought. In the fashion of Harry Potter, Twilight, and Hunger Games, books 4 and 5 are actually a single story that are divided into two parts. The worst part is that one of the main new "features" (Zombies) is left as an unfinished thread at the end of the book in case she wants to come back and write more books. For the Zombies / Shades to play such a pivotal role in these books and then to not wrap up that storyline at the end felt very incomplete and dissatisfying.Do yourself a favor, stop at book 3.

Somewhat dissapointed
I want to first off by saying that I enjoyed this series a lot, but I just had to say that I was a little disappointed in the ending. It felt to me like it just ended. Most times in series like this one you get a chapter on what happens after everything from the story is concluded. The author does do this but I was disappointed on how limited it was. Now if she plans to write another book within the same story line like the author from the Percy Jackson series is doing I can understand why she is limiting the conclusion, because we will be seeing these characters again. If she is not then I am really disappointed with the limited amount of wrap up there was. I finished the book feeling rather unsatisfied and wanting more. The author does so well in getting you invested in the characters that she leaves you thinking there is another book out there, but there is not and she (as far as I know) has no intention of writing one. I am going to go on record that I will recommend these books to anyone just in the hopes that someday the Author will revisit this world and continue the story.

Similarities to Seven Realms series
I have read all of the Heir chronicles. I just purchased this one on amazon because it was cheaper then ibooks at the time. I love everything to do with Cinda Williams Chima's books. Great author. However you can read some similarities to the Seven Realms series, which I highly suggest reading first because they are just awesome, but it really doesn't matter its just personal preference. It is a good story line, just like I said was hoping for a bit more originality. It wasn't a huge impact, just noticeable, so do not let it deter you from reading a great series.

Third time is the . . . fail. Very sad
I really enjoyed the first two books in this series. My wife bought the first book for our 12 year old son and since he was reading Divergent, I picked it up and read it. It moved fast and was a nice easy read for a rainy Sunday. I liked it enough to order the next 2, and also enjoyed the second book. The third book seems like Chima was fulfilling a contract or just trying to make more money. There are some spoilers below, but nothing that will tell you anything You won't figure out by the end of Chapter 3 (if not sooner). After reading the second book, I noticed a possible trend. Chima seemed to like developing a powerful a male lead and then have him get saved by a girl who turns out to be more powerful than he is in the end. Jack got "openings" where he could have injured Ellen, but he never really got the chance to spare her life like she got with him. In their subsequent sparring matches, you find that is basically unchanged. In the second book, Seph is supposed to be a super high powered wizard, but of course he winds up with Madison, who has to save him in the end and who can drain him of his power as easily as drinking a can of soda. Jack's aunt was also the mastermind of the anti-Roses movement. Yeah, we all saw coming, but again, Linda was more important than Leander, and ultimately accomplished more. Even if Chima is writing for girls, it was a bit predictable.Based on the first chapter preview of the Dragon's Heir (the chapter you get at the end of the Wizard's Heir) I sort of expected that trend to continue to be the case for Jason. My guess was Leesha. The prologue of the book is about Madison, however, and after reading it and chapter 1 you can predict that Jack will lose the one advantage he held over Ellen, the magic sword which made him her equal, that Seph's girlfriend Madison won't only be able to drain his powers in the end, but that instead she'll wind up the Dragon's Heir and be much stronger than him. By then end of the fourth chapter, there was nothing unexpected, and honestly, Chima is a story teller, not someone who's writing is so beautiful that you stay enthralled when the ending is so predictable. Very disappointing, but maybe OK for a 12 year old. That's why I gave it 3 stars. I suspect my son is closer to her target audience, and he may not notice the obvious nature of it.

Really good story, somewhat bad writing. * SPOILER ALERT*
This series has been really captivating, and this book was a great addition to it overall. There were a few glaring problems. Some things seem to happen that the author doesn't explain. Things just kind of put there to keep the story going. For starters, it makes zero sense that Hastings and Linda abandon their teenage son and his teenage friends to fight the magical Armageddon while they live it up in the castle they over took. Especially since the last book they were both willing to die for Seph, now they could care less? The character Maddie was really unlikable, and just became more so near the end. The idea that she would kill her love, all her friends, let the town die, all because the guy is holding her family hostage. Even tho she knows giving him what he wants will get double crossed. That whole scenario of the one man army of Maddie was bad. I understand what the author was going for , but ...bad. Just bad. I mean she lived on this mountain her whole life, couldn't she have even looked in obvious places like an old coal furnace? And then the end of Barber. Maddie suddenly is the most powerful magical person in the universe , the build up of the power of the dragon stone, yet she is completely useless to use it? The only change is sometimes she sparkles in the sun??? So Grace accidentally saves them all because she is an ellictor? How did the reason lady come back to take the 2 wizard stones after she abdicated power to Maddie and left? If it was Maddie who did it, how can she not know how to do ANYTHING? I think the author had parts of this book written in her head, and just made everything else fit.

great series although started slow
I wish there were half stars. I'd give this a 4.3 probably but given that it's a very good ending to the trilogy I felt a 5 would push my overall average rating to a 4. (I'd give 3 and 4 to the first two books)
