Description
Product Description Nominated for Two Golden Globes® - Best Actress and Best Actor in a TV Miniseries; Lifetime Television's most-watched miniseries of 2005. Featuring Emmy® and Golden Globe® Award winner Donald Sutherland (The Italian Job), Academy Award® and Golden Globe® Award winner Mira Sorvino (Mighty Aphrodite) and Trainspotting's Robert Carlyle, Human Trafficking is at once a gripping thriller, a cautionary tale, and one of the most fundamentally important stories of our time. DVD Features include: Interviews with Mira Sorvino and Robert Carlyle, Behind the Scenes with the cast and crew, and A "Take Action" Guide to stop human trafficking now! .com The Lifetime cable channel made TV history with this ambitious, acclaimed original miniseries on the horrifying phenomenon of human trafficking, or sexual slavery. It follows the fictional cases of young women around the world, lured or abducted, sometimes right off the street, into a world of unspeakable brutality--which the filmmakers show in almost overwhelming detail at times. Mira Sorvino and Donald Sutherland star as American government officials bent on exposing and stopping the phenomenon, and both are more than serviceable in their roles. But the revelation is Robert Carlyle, the Scottish star of The Full Monty and Trainspotting, who here is transformed into a ruthless criminal mastermind behind his own trafficking network. Even his Eastern European accent is spot-on and blood-chilling. The supporting cast of women and girls is strong, and in some cases, truly heartbreaking. And while sometimes almost unbearably harsh, the film serves as a reminder this terrible situation still exists and thrives; and told through the characters, is also a well-paced thriller. --A.T. some fine actors in a script written by hacks
Mira Sorvino, Donald Sutherland, Robert Carlyle--solid actors with a history of excellent work to prove it.My probelm here is with the jerky camera (like watching a car commercial), weak direction and weaker writing. Is it necessary to show someone shedding tears every ten, fifteen minutes or going on some hysterical jag to keep reminding us how dire the situation is?(Overacting is no fun to watch. Director's fault, that one.)Yes, something should be done about the problem of human trafficking, and I hope governments of all nations have had their eyes opened up a bit, but the way things are presented here literally make you cringe.Flick is abundant with cliches and implausabilities. Good stories are character-driver, as opposed to plot-driven.So much here is idiotic and lacks credibility. Sorvino's background is absolutely sloppy writing (not to mention lazy) and not needed. Her bickering with her (husband? boyfriend? Not sure) was not only ridiculous, but annoying as hell. Here she is this U.S. government-trained I.C.E agent, right?--but the (primary) reason she is able to relate to one of the females (who had been abducted in the Check Republic and smuggled into the U.S. and forced into prostitution) is because she, herself, had been molested by her (FAVORITE) uncle years before at age 12.Come on. (I say by merely Sorvino's agent being a decent human being, with a need to do the right thing, would have taken care of that, without the writers resorting to this contrived background tale that stuck out as such like a sore thumb.)Not only that, she ALSO happens to be Russian as well (by birth), who was raised in the U.S. (therefore giving her EVEN MORE CREDIBILITY with all these females who had been abducted in various countries overseas). Also, later on in the film, she passes herself off as a Russian mail-order bride wannabe. Wait a minute. Are you kidding me? ARE YOU SERIOUS? (she does this to go undercover.)REALLY? Don't you realize you're insulting the viewer?HOW MUCH RESEARCH DID THESE WRITERS ACTUALLY DO--IS WHAT I'D LIKE TO KNOW.SPOILER AHEAD:At some point in the film, one of the victims, having been freed and given protective custody, is being shown her hotel room where she will be staying for a certain duration. While her "protector" Agent Sorvino is chatting on her cell phone, the said female (in protective custody) steps out on the balcony to take in the view below.Guess what happens next? Said "PROTECTED" female is chilled by a sniper --- to Agent Sorvino's horror and dismay.Sure. You call this writing? Tell me another fairytale. Better yet, learn your movie cliches (so that you might avoid them when you write your next HBO special, folks.)This is what I mean by hack writing. And there are so many other situations that reek of cliche and/or WAY TOO FAR-FETCHED and/or SEEN IT BEFORE WAY TOO MANY TIMES in other weak flicks.I'll end this rant by saying this is not the definitive take on the topic. I hope a real writer with some serious talent writes a screenplay about trafficking in humans, and that a genuinely talented film director handles the reins.

We cannot feel how the victim suffering.
The most chilling movie about human trafficking ,edge of your seat drama ,not a movie for the faint of heart ,it's good to know that it's out in the open now and being fought by law agency, it's a world wide business and the movie takes you their in all corners of the world that gets their victims in all forms and devices are used beware the wolf in sheep's clothing ,age of victims are from 21yrs down. The movie estimated that yearly about 800,000 are trafficked worldwide, the movie shows how hard it is to combat the organized criminals because of the big money at stake for the criminals ,great acting from all the actors ,I like the veteran actor Donald Sutherland and I'll never forget his big line from the movie "a sale of drugs is a one sale a human can sell many times over".

Human Trafficking: A MUST SEE
I cannot believe anyone would have any complaints whatsoever about this movie. One exception: the current data is more that 800,000 women and children are trafficked over the Mexico/US border each year (the actual number runs more than a million), that's over the US border--usually into the US, not worldwide. Worldwide trafficking is staggering. The topic/issue remains contemporary and, tragically, the numbers are growing--while the average age of victims is getting younger. The acting was top-notch and both US stars were up for Emmys. All the actors did a solid job--I could not make one complaint and I'm a fairly picky movie viewer--I don't like my time wasted. It wasn't. I have to say I was glued and drawn the entire time. Solid story, plot, very fluid, believable writing, set, etc., and, again, a top-notch Director (catch the bonus features after the movie: you'll hear Donald Sutherland go into detail about this director). It's a movie (actually a miniseries) to keep in your collection--especially if you like the history of the fundamental root cause of the escalating Human Rights' violations/abuses, predation, sadism and torture that is as contemporary today as it was during the Holocaust. It is the contemporary Holocaust that must not be neglected.

Long, Poignant, Sad Story. personal rating of PG-13
This movie is 180 minutes long, and yes, there are definitely storylines and pieces that could have been cut out to make it shorter. However, I understand some of the reasoning behind showing all the little substories they did. It gives viewers a wider scope of how different people are affected by this horrific business.Helena, Nadia, Annie, and Kate have vastly different backgrounds, but they all become intricately affected by Sergei Karpovich's gigantic sex slave empire. Kate throws all her effort into shutting Karpovich down, while Annie, Helena, and Nadia experience first hand the horrors and pains brought forth by a mixture of greed, power-addiction, and lust.I wondered why this movie wasn't rated. I would say it is strongly PG-13. It's not a feel-good movie, but it is powerful and it has a message: Modern Day Slavery is alive and well in all its ugly glory. Nothing horrific is shown in all its gritty detail, but there's definitely enough there that you know exactly what's going on. This would be an excellent movie to watch for a discussion group.

Harrowing Viewing
Right from the start this two part mini series is disturbing. But once the titles go up so the film goes into high gear. Basically the film follows four story plots; The single mom/fake boyfriend, the schoolgirl wannabe model, a young teen on holiday with her parents and the poor Filipino family who voluntarily sell off their daughter. The first two plotlines form the bulk, with the others just cutting in.Robert Carlyle is truly frightening as the bad guy ‘businessman’ who’s just doing his job and the man behind the trafficking whilst Donald Sutherland and Mira Sorvino play the good guy counterparts. The film is graphic but not in a tittulating way, it’s a brutal portrayal of a sick world and despite being made in 2005, these sort of events are still regularly highlighted on national news or current documentaries. Although highly Americanised, this gritty 4 hour TV programme that manages to hold the attention throughout as the four separate stories unfold.Anyone who has a daughter will be terrified by this, but all will be disturbed. Definitely a film that should be seen by all, but it is upsetting on many levels, so be warned. Like they say in the film “you have to have a thick skin to do this job…” but iyou'd need to thick skinned not to be moved.

A totally necessary watch
This is not easy viewing but should be compulsory. The superlative performances of all involved bring the horrific reality of modern day slavery to vivid, brutal life. This skillfully constructed miniseries in 2 parts tells the stories of several different strands of the human trafficing market, all orchestrated by the evil character played by Robert Carlyle. There are the optimistic and naive young women (little more than girls really) who are deliberately suckered by men into believeing they are loved and wanted, encouraged to leave their home countries for a new life in the states, only to be shoved face first into brutal brothel life of the very worst order. There are the chilren of the phillipines, sold by family members into the sex trade and the kidnapped children, stolen from their parents who will be traded internationally on the slave market. And there are the good guys, those who are working desperately to connect the dots and smash this brutal trade, one person, one brothel, one procurer at a time. The character played my Mira Sorvino and that of her boss portrayed by Donald Sutherland stop this from being an exploitation exercise. They are the counterpoint to the horror, showing that whilst those held in the jaws of this awsomly profitable trade feel abandonded and bereft, there are those who are moving heaven and earth to stop this. Just not fast enough. This is heartbreaking stuff. the performance of the young girl who plays Natasha is heartwrenching to watch and this left me with a wish to find something, anything I could do to stop this evil crime against humanity, going on under our very noses. This is a fictionalised account of a real situation- one none of us can turn a blind eye to. I saw the first part of this by accident, televised on Sky whilst I was on holiday in Italy. It was so good that my holiday was then dominated by combing the sky channels daily for part 2, i had to know how this ended. I had to wait almost two weeks to get back to the UK and order the DVD then a further week for it to come before I could watch part 2. get it, see it and make your friends watch it too. This cannot be missed.

slavery
This isnt as tough or as real as the british sex traffic but its still worth a watch . yes it is rather hammy at times and there are some rather neat movie style twists but I would definately recommend it as good old fashioned north atlantic tv , just like we used to watch stuff like Holocaust or Roots and be hooked to the tv and the true life stories . There is so much sex crime v women in the news so this is still a relavent film ; showing the horrors that go on through out the world . Robert carlyle making an interesting baddy [ dont they have any real eastern europeans in canada for the part? ] and its always good to see Donald Sutherland take over the screen . cant say same for Mira Sorvino ; she is the weak link , with her plastic face and attempt to be some modern day Lindsay Wagner , she just doesnt convince . A film to make you think , as there are still slaves today .

Harrowing but something we should all know about!
Very distrubing film but it is a film we all should watch just to bring home the truth behind the headline in relation to 'human trafficing'.Absorbing as much as shocking & it has spurred me on to help local charities helping to fight this problem.Very easy film to follow & you feel as if you get to know the characters...you are almost there every step of their journey...travelling with them through their hopes & dreams to a world of greedy, sleezy & exploitation & then we come to the conclusion for each of the victims. A really sad film but would have to rate it excellent in exposing a world which is vibrant on our streets yet is so undetected by 'Joe Public'

The cast are amazing in it
A hard hitting film, it certainly does not pull any punches. The cast are amazing in it, but at the back of your mind as you watch this, you are only to aware that this is happening all over the world. People being trafficked into countries and used as slave labour, especially young females sold into the sex trade to be horrifically abused over and over again. Not for the faint hearted!
