love the product its easy to use, sounds great, loads of features which i haven't fully figured out yet but it does what i need it for. the battery life is my only complaint, and it SOMETIMES works with the double A's and other times it doesn't register that theres batteries inside. but so far its been functioning fine

Recently bought the Tascam model down from this one. I did a test recording and I was very disappointed with the on board mics recording. I returned the unit. I called Tascam to discuss their top line MKIII model. They said it was their best in every respect- including better on board uni directional mics. (We will see. If not, it goes back for a refund). I got the unit and tested out the uni directional mics via a recording. WOW, it was the bomb! This was one the rare times a manufacturer did not oversell me on their product. BTW, the uni directional mic capsules are actually stereo XY placement even though the outer mic housing suggests directional forward. The internal electronics are very clean and professional but there's plenty of information on the web about all of that. The omni directional mics; well, they are just ok i guess. I'm not going to use them. I've bought plenty of equipment over the years where the units look much better than it actually performs. In my opinion, the MKIII actually performs as well as it looks! I have no doubt that when I try recording with a set of high end condenser mics attached, the recording is going to be stellar.

The uni and omni microphone pick up sound very well; the wheel is easy to use and efficient; recording setup is easy. I would recommend this to anyone doing oral history intervews.

Ok, so full disclosure, I am not an expert who will throw around audio buzz words and scientific jargon that, in my opinion, only truly affects a very small percentage of professionals.So I am a music teacher and I purchased this for recording solos, choir and instrumental performances, as well as film projects for our AV Club. I know, overkill for what I am doing right? Whatever, I did a lot of research, and one of the draws was the sturdy construction and generally user friendly nature of this product.I have had this product for close to a year now and it has performed quite well. Any time that I have had a decrease in quality in recordings, or any sort of issues has been completely USER error. In other words, I screwed something up. Watch tutorials. Experiment. Sit down with this guy and play. Don't wait until you have a live show and then get upset with the results of your recording. Honestly, if you're basing your buy/no buy decision on a review here you're in the wrong place. Go to youtube and listen/watch reviews and tutorials that will better inform.FOUR STARS: Why 4 and not 5? Well I purchased this open box from Amazon and one of my XLR cables got stuck in the recorder. The lock mechanism must have broken inside or something. But, the replacement they sent me has performed perfectly well. I must admit, I am always a little nervous about pulling out those XLRs now.
