Upping The Ante
Bokurano is a fairly dark story by nature, and this volume is no exception, as it's arguably the point at which the story truly hits its stride. In this volume, two more pilots step up, but by now, the military has taken an interest in the battles, and works to prevent more deaths, given that thousands of people have perished by this point. Unfortunately, by now, the stresses of fighting battles in which the pilot dies even if they win, and the world ends if they lose, combined with various personal issues, are getting to some of the pilots at the worst possible moments, which nicely increases the tension.Incidentally, though, one thing I liked about the anime is that these pilots went third and fourth, rather than fifth and sixth, and thus fought when they were still grappling with the harsh reality. The enemy faced in the chapter is also a bigger threat than before, which works well considering that the military is now on the protagonists' side and helps complement the sense of hopelessness that the first pilot feels.Readers should also be warned that one of the pilots' stories is extremely disturbing, involving pedophilia, gang rape, a planned murder-suicide, teen pregnancy and mass murder in the name of revenge. Arguably, the rest of the story isn't any worse than this, but it's still disturbing enough to warrant a warning for those who are sensitive about these sorts of things. All in all, if you're willing to read through highly disturbing subject matter, this volume is well worth your time.
