I am cutting through the roots of some really thick grass roots on a large property to make a garden will this be powerful enough to get the job done?

I live in Central Florida and it can handle At Augustine grass roots easy. If you have that or anything easier you will be fine. It is tougher than it looks!

does it have variable speed or just on/off

It has an on/off trigger you hold while using. No variable speed but you can pulse the trigger switch for rapid on/off.

will this break the sprinklers pvc pipe and sprinklers heads?

Some of the plastic heads will break and I would imagine some of the metal heads could be damaged. This machine is powerful but very easy to handle. I really like mine and it is easy to handle in tight places. Plastic pipes will be severely damaged if you hit them.

Just opened my new tiller and there is oil that leaked out of the gear box. Is that normal during shipping and do I need to add more?

I received my tiller last night and when I unpacked, the lower part of the box was drenched with oil. I'm afraid to start it now... Will let it sit for a day before starting and see if it leaks more. If it does, I'm sending it back for replacement...
