Best-value bright external monitor for filmmakers
I was an early adopter of the first Shogun when it came out, which was also my first external monitor for shooting video. At the time, recording capability in the same unit was really important, because cameras couldn't deliver. Today, cameras record internally at decent codecs, so it's all about the monitor - and even there, the one big flaw of the Shogun was its brightness, measured in "nits." That's where the Bestview R7 comes in: it's more than DOUBLE the brightness of the old Shogun, and on par with the brightness of the newest Atomos monitors. The R7 has all the "advanced" features that are, by now, the bare minimum we want in a monitor. Among them is the ability to apply your camera's LUT onto its flattened log footage, that otherwise would make it difficult to judge exposure, etc. Many monitors even today lack this feature, though you need to be careful about double-applying a LUT if your camera has its own LUT viewing features ("Gamma Assist" on Sony Alpha, for example).Atomos had boasted of its menu system, and while it's still one of the best, Bestview has done a surprisingly good job at making the touchscreen interface fairly intuitive. It's a smart decision to make the buttons and menu items mostly textual, instead of having to memorize icons (and learn what they each do). When it comes to the physical enclosure, I actually like that it's plastic, to keep the weight down. It's durable enough. I also like that there is an HDMI output - other monitors skimp on that. The included cold shoe mount is OK, and I actually like that it's limited to 180-degree rotation, so that it stays level with the back plane of the camera. But I'll definitely be adding an extension arm that I already have, for maximum flexibility - and I wish that the R7 had more 1/4"-20 mounting holes, on all sides. Similarly, there's no place to mount a sun shade.I didn't find the Hotkeys to be as usual as they could be, limited to a few shortcuts that I'm least likely to use. But there is a USB port for firmware updates, and seeing how Bestview has already delivered a firmware update so soon after launch, it looks like they'll be listening to customers and improving the product over time. Now that I'm shooting in at least 4K resolution all the time, with razor-thin depth of field, nailing focus is more important than ever. before It's just not possible on those tiny little screens built into cameras. So, this product is a small investment to make, if it saves your priceless footage from simple mistakes that are normally hard to see.

Great price for an equally impressive monitor.
Incredible monitor for the price. The manual has spelling errors and is not very well written, but if you are a video professional then you obviously should have a little common sense and be able to figure out the touch screen which is super well laid out and easy to use.No you cannot touch the screen to focus like one of the other reviewers wanted, but hellooo, why would that be a feature, it's an external monitor. SMH.Our of the box there is was a lut being applied which would give the impression that the colors are off, but turn off the lut, do a basic monitor calibration with brightness, contrast, blue only mode, and turn down the saturation a tad, and the image very closely matched my gh5 lcd.I later calibrated it to more closely match my professionally calibrated desktop monitor. All the tools are there to get it where you need it to be.Ultimately it has everything you could ever need in an external field monitor for a great price. There is no professional website to go to. Multiple domains from overseas is all I could find. One worked, while the others were suspended or offline. As such I hope I never have to warranty repair this item. It did have great packaging and a good build to it though so I don't think it would prematurely fail based on first impressions.I was also confused with the name. There is Bestview and Desview products that are the exact same device. From what I gather I'm getting a great device with bells and whistles at a under market price, possibly because it's not a well known company. But I'm not complaining, because I love the product.

Problems with this monitor, but I kept it
Here are some of the problems I found with this monitor while using it with a Fuji X-T3 (random order):1. There is no real user manual, and the manufacturer's website provides no help (for example, no information on firmware). Weeks ago I sent a list of questions and comments to 2 different addresses for DesView/BestView and received no reply. I would rate this level of support as abysmal.2. Some menu items are grayed out and therefore unavailable, for example "All Wave" and "HD". Why is that?3. The menu always opens to the shortcut menu instead of the last opened menu item.4. The monitor's zoom function can't be used to check focus because the image is just blown up instead of re-sampled. So what's the point of the zoom? (However, if you use the camera's zoom, you can check focus.)5. There are no LUTs specifically for Fuji cameras. But there are 2 LUTs for Rec.709, neither of which have the right colors, and neither of which are explained.6. The exposure tools — histogram, waveform, and vectorscope — can't be enlarged. The waveform is particularly hard to see. Why can't you touch them to toggle a larger view?7. "Nine Grid" seems like a pointless feature. What was the intent for this?8. Why isn't the dial on the top surface programmable?9. The touch menu should be a bit larger so that it's easier to pick out the item you want.10. Why does inserting the battery turn the monitor on?11. The monitor devours battery life, but I suppose that's to be expected.12. The included hotshoe mount could not be tightened enough to hold the monitor in place. It seems to be the same mount sold by AndyCine, but my AndyCine mount does work, while this one does not.13. The screen is too shiny and it gathers fingerprints like mad.Having said all this, I nonetheless decided to keep the monitor for occasions when I wanted a larger image than my 5" Atomos Shinobi. Some of the features do work and are welcome, and the monitor is bright.

Monitor is good, but the cold shoe mount missed the mark
Overall a great monitor. The picture quality is SUPER SHARP. I own a Sony A7iii and often find myself being disappointed with its LCD screen. I even sometimes question whether my shots are in focus or even good for that matter, until I get to editing on my computer and get to see the actual footage in high quality. This monitor allows you to see your footage in all its glory as you're filming it. It comes loaded with functions like peak focusing, zebra exposure, inputting LUTs, etc. Some bad things that I noticed are :- HDMI doesn't work if plugged in all way snuggly. Personally, I have to loosen the HDMI a tiny bit for the signal to work.- The Mount that comes with the monitor is complete trash. It has good build quality (all metal) but this makes it impossible to tighten fully in the coldshoe of the camera. Other similar mounts have holes in the tightening ring so that you can tighten the mount with an Allen key. This a must have for these cold shoe mounts. My monitor fell off of my camera TWICE due to this.-The monitor has a red LED light that will drain your battery even if the monitor is off.For the price, this monitor is great and will be an excellent tool to have during my future projects.P.s. I wish there was a case that I could get for this thing.
