Farsi, also known as Persian, is the official language of Iran. This bilingual dictionary contains over 8000 total entries. It is for use by both native and Farsi speakers, and pronunciation and part of speech are indicated for each entry. Review: Fantastic! - This is the best language dictionary ever. It has everything from transliterations to a pronunciation guide. Nice compact size, with many words. Review: Farsi Dictionary - I LOVE this book, was exactly what I was looking for. It has English transliteration, English word, Farsi Romanized transliteration, and Farsi in calligraphy script for thousands of words. This is great for me, wanting authentic, low-stress reading practice, and to flip through and learn vocabulary when I have a few minutes at work or in my car. A pocket-sized book, it is very handy and fits in my shoulder satchel easily. There arenโt a lot of Farsi study materials, and this fits a niche interest with exactly what I wanted. Unfortunately, the binding is extremely fragile -pages are glued in, and I think the weather may have gotten to my copy before I did. I have had the book for about a week or two, and already pages are coming loose and falling out. Tape fixes it for now, but I love this book and want it to last. I donโt know if there is a hardback, but go for that if it exists. Otherwise, just be gentle with it. It has already helped me learn to read Farsi! Get a stylus and trace over the letters until they make sense. I might find a bookbinder out in town and have it rebound. Love this thing. Edit on February 22, 2026: Yep, the binding for this is terrible. I spend more tome try g to fix it than reading it. I will try to find a bookbinder out in town. Sad, I really do like this product.

I recommend it
Very helpful transliteration. It is a brief pocket sized dictionary, great for beginners and intermediate level. The way itโs organized, it takes seconds to find the word I need. I also have a large old-fashioned dictionary besides this one with tiny print for when I canโt find a word here. Occasional typos are present but the overall all worth of the dictionary is justified by its convenience.

Farsi dictionary
When you study a language, you need a good dictionary. I use workbooks, and drawings aren't always enough to convey what words mean. This dictionary has Farsi-English and English-Farsi, with Farsi script and transliterations. A very useful book.

Not Worth the Frustration
For starters, this book is geared for those speaking the Queen's English, rather than American English. Therefore, if you cannot think like an Englishman, queuing rather than standing in line, for instance, then this is definitely not the book for you. The terms chosen in this book differ greatly from those chosen in the Rosetta Stone programs, so if you are learning Farsi (Persian) using Rosetta Stone, then, again, this is not the book for you. The transliteration from Farsi to English is handy, but, in my opinion, it fails to make up for all the words one wants and cannot find herein. In travel, there is little more frustrating than being unable to find a needed word in one's dictionary. I would recommend instead the Hippocrene Standard Dictionary: English-Farsi (Persian) and Farsi (Persian)-English dictionaries, in two volumes, by S. Haim. It is better, I feel, to have more than one needs than to need something and not have it. However, according to many booksellers, these Hippocrene dictionaries are becoming difficult to find, sad to say.

Excellent buy !
Good book. Translations are reliable, and has helpful guide to sound out the words if new to Farsi.

Persian Concise Dictionary (Hippocrene)
Very Complete for it's compact size. Starts with teaching the Alphabet, and goes on to the more complex words, which is hard to find in a Dictionary of this size.

Nice little word list
It's not an exhaustive dictionary of usage and style. However, anyone who uses a language dictionary in only one direction is just asking to call himself an "army" when he wants to say game show "host" -- and accrue to himself the ridicule he has so richly earned. Also, the book's back cover says it's for "travelers, businesspeople or students of Farsi or English". In context, I'd not assume that "students" means Ph.D. candidates in Middle Eastern Studies. There are more scholarly works for you folks, anyway. I'm a beginning Farsi student and I'm a bit older (hence, equipped with external visual enhancements - "glasses"). One thing that I REALLY REALLY like about this book is that, in spite of its small size, the Farsi script is big enough to see. This has been a real issue for me studying Arabic and Farsi. 10 point English script is NOT equivalent to 10 point Arabic. So, for that one thing alone, I'm willing to overlook a myriad of other relatively minor shortcomings. That said, while I would have appreciated the short vowel markings, the English transliteration is good -- and probably more helpful to the beginner (admittedly, a bit more dangerous, too, but nobody will EVER think me a native-speaker, anyway.) It's a good, useable aid. It's basic, but it's aimed at a pretty basic audience. Each entry has 4 items as follows: E ~~> F agility // ejilitii // n (Farsi script) // chaboki // (note, it shows a ^ over the a in chaboki) F ~~> E (farsi script) // rahnama (^ over 1st/last a's) // guide // gayd (w/ ^) That's what you get. Hope this helps!

Good building blocks to learn the language.
The book came in perfect condition and is rather small. Looking for a way to learn farci through a book is challenging and expensive but this book was cheap and is packed with I formation. It has a list of farci to english words. The first list is indexed by farci characters a - etc and the second list is indexed by english characters a -z. So for and English or farci speaker you would use either I dex if not both. Stupid to expect all words to exist in this book. I don't even know all the English words and I am 37. It also has they keys to farci alphabet, pronunciation, english alphabet pronunciations. It is limitations as well as un limited, example, there are six words listed for bozorg while one word listed for father. I can see how one would become very accustomed to speaking and writing farci using this book while neiche details may not exist this little book is an excellent choice for people like myself that only know a handfull of words and maybe four farci characters. A keeper for me.

Adequate
What it has: Lots of words Pronunciation guide - English - Persian word in Latin script - Farsi script. What it lacks: Notes on usage, internal phonetic guide to pronunciation, any information about parts of speech, roots (verb roots are very important to Persian conjugation) or any other information you might find in a more traditional dictionary. So if you are looking for a word list of lots of Persian words, this might be your book. If you are looking for information about those words, it won't do.
