This is a cover.. not the crate. For a crate bigger the better. Will depend on your use and length of time as well as size of dog.

Can the mesh window be covered for full blackout?

No, the cover is only the front and opposite side to the blackout. You could drape a blanket over that side or put some material over the mesh attached with Velcro I suppose.
