Can you program all the gmrs/frs freqs and murs as well?

Yes, I did using CHIRP.  I have the same channels programmed into this radio and my Baofeng HT.  Just used the FRS to manage my daughter’s move into her new house.

Question 2

It says that this radio has a mic speaker, in the manual, the mic pinout does not show the speaker pinout, where is the pinout for the speaker?

This radio has the telephone snap in type plug for the mic. The location is on the left side of the faceplate under the on/off button.

Question 3

New ham here (with a dumb question): what do i need besides this to get on the air?  an antenna?  fuses?  noise blankers?

Accepted Answer

The 778 is a basic 2m-70cm radio.  You will have to have software to program the radio, RT Systems will have the software.  You will also need a programming cable.  Just request the programming cable when you order the software.
If you are putting it in your car, be careful not to put it anywhere it might interfere with your driving.  Wire the power leads directly to the battery, under no circumstances wire it to the fuse panel or cigarette lighter.
If you're using it as a base, you will need a base antenna and coax.  They're numerous types of antennas to choose from.  The best way is to buy a dual band antenna.  In this case a 2m/440 antenna.  as far as the coax, I would use LMR400.  The antenna and coax can be purchased at HRO in Anaheim or on Amazon.
As far as the fuse, it should have one as part of the wiring harness, if it doesn't, a lot of radios use the same type of harnesses.  You might find it on Ebay or Amazon and HRO.

Can this be used for fire department use? Also, does it come with the software to program it do you have to buy it separately?

I used Chirp to program mine, I do use it to scan the department I work for. As far as transmitting the FCC says it needs to be part 90 compliant, although when you check the FCC’s website for this model, it does have a waiver to transmit above 480. I would not recommend it due to how steep the fine can be, but to each there own.
