This book has way too many unlikely plot twists and ridiculous coincidences. I usually really enjoy Peter May's Scottish mysteries, but this one is too much. I suspended disbelief and suspended it some more but by the end I was just getting more and more irritated.

A disappointing return to the Hebrides
I enjoyed the Hebrides setting again but this is no where near as good as the other books Peter May has set there. The story slows and picks up pace unpredictably, character development is not as good, even the descriptions of the Island are no where near as good as previously. Some repeat characters don't really help. Overall - rather disappointing.

A disappointment
I have loved Peter May’s wonderful Lewis trilogy and ordered the book when I learned that he had returned to the island. His scenes of childhood friendships were great as usual, and his description of the Harris tweed industry was interesting. However his account of the murder suspects was so full of improbable events, and his account of a wild party that the widow attended after the burial strains belief.

Not impressed at all
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading all Peter May’s previous books but this one was hugely disappointing. It starts well as a good thriller, proceeds until the last few pages as a love story and ends in a most ridiculous way. Surely Peter May’s fans deserve better!

Starts well, captivates the reader with descriptive settings and action. Slides downhill by relying on" red herrings" and stereotypical disturbed gay characters.A crazed closet lesbian who has people blow up or personally dispatches them with a butcher knife due to her obsession with her straight girl friend.Give me a break. Add to that a drug addict gay fashion designer with a foul mouth. Why are the only nasty people in this book gay? Offensive. Get into the 21st century Mr. May. Even the straights are stereotypes. The big strong man protecting the poor vulnerable woman. Also the faked death thing is old. Remember " Coffin Road"?

I love May's beautiful prose when it comes to describing the Hebridean stark landscape, especially when he shows us the sea. The most dramatic scene in the book happens in the sea, and leaves one shaking. So, why does he insist on side stories that happen far away (New York in this case), that are distracting and less natural. We lose touch with the Peter May we love here. "I'll keep you safe" has some wonderful characters and locations, nestled into the Scottish Western Highlands. He should plan on staying there.

Peter May's Potboiler
Let me say that I usually love Mr May's work , but this book is so over the top and cliche ridden that it was a great disappointment. From the unbalanced fashion designer , the evil lesbian , and the bad mother who ,of course, is killed. It seems like a list was checked off . Please DO purchase Mr May's other books , which are great reads.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book!
I can't say enough about Peter May's writing, it's just splendid. His characters have such depth and the settings in the Scottish islands are the real draw for me. My introduction to Mr. May's writing began with Black House which I found while traveling in Canada. I have and will continue to read and recommend his wonderful books.

Disappointing
I was quite disappointed with this book. I am normally a huge fan of Peter May, but this book is nowhere near as good as most of his others. The ending was a bit unbelievable, and, even though I'm sure the Hebrides are stunning, I did get a bit bored with all the descriptions of the scenery. I hope his next book sees him back to his usual form.

Beware
Because of the addition of the words "the sensational New Hebrides set thriller" to the title, Amazon didn't pick up the fact that I'd downloaded this book already and allowed me to purchase it for a second time. What a waste of money! And, while I'm on the subject, does anyone else find these marketing phrases added to the titles of books intensely irritating?

Read Peters Wonderful Back Catalogue First
My favourite author with an incredible back collection of books - which come very high recommended. This Book gets off to a brilliant start (and middle) and if I had to review the book before I'd read the last chapter I'd have said this was worthy of 5 stars too but ultimately it's a little dissapointing. No plot spoilers from me.

Don't Bother. Really Don't Bother
Such a disappointment that a writer as good as Peter May could produce this contrived tosh. If you've not read The Black House - try it. It's so much better than this. The ending - if you get that far - is beyond annoying.
