Its about the device class - DAPs
It seems all of these devices are inconsistent in their choice of OS and version of OS, features - especially networking and sonic capabilities. The market is flooded and its hard to tell what you get for the price and what you get today will be replaces next quarter by something from another or the same vendor for greater cost and questionable value - the Cayin N6ii is one of those. So take this eval as generic toward the whole class of devices.I am content using my existing headphone amps with my lcdi4, hd800s, etc. on my existing Hugo 2 or Mojo, both of which are portable and can use streaming data sources; this class of device is too hard to chase or figure out. That said, delivery was as expected, excellent packaging, and the UI was friendly and interactive. Cayin also used a current version of the android OS meaning you do have access to the real google playstore so you can get current versions of Tidal, Qobuz and other apps you need.If you like DAPs, this is a good choice.

Best portable DAP with Android at this price point!
Just returned form a trip to Tokyo and a long visit to Yodabashi Camera store where they have this model, plus about 100 others including the obviously fantastic Astell & Kern devices.I'd never heard of Cayin, so was slightly cautious, but wanted to have the flexibility of having a DAP with Android as it's base OS as it then opens up the world of various app based audio sources (notwithstanding any application based audio fidelity based limits) such as Google Music (where I've archived a lot my own collection), SoundCloud, MixCloud, and a whole bunch of others. The Astell and Kern devices although a serious first option, could not give me this, so, the choice naturally fell to something else, and, the with much enthusiasm the N6ii was the recommended best replacement.I use Shure 846 earphones and upgraded the stock 3.5mm cable to a 4.4mm cable with MMCX connectors, and... holy moly guacamole, this sound is INCREDIBLE!Seriously thrilled by the quality and fidelity of the sound. I've not heard one thing so far that compete with it at the price point, and it seriously unleashes the audio fidelity available from the Shure's - like nothing else can. They are tested with up to 512GB cards, as they support the SDXC standard, but, SDXC goes up to a maximum of 2TB, there were just no commercially available 2TB cards on the market at the time of release - hence the 512GB limit I presume. These (2TB) are on the verge of if not have already now come out so should be something that if not naturally supported out of the box with the N6ii should be something that Cayin adds via firmware update.Other than that, the devices comes with a glass screen protector in the box, a leather pouch, a 3.5mm stereo to 4.4mm elbow connector and 64gb of on board storage, which obviously not all available due to file system data + the OS.It runs Android 8.1 and was last security patched in Dec 2017 (this is the only thing I'm not impressed with) and comes with Google Play so you can install away. No finger print sensor for quick unlocking (pin/pattern/smart/none) nor camera.I will log in to my account (google) on this but not install anything sensitive like email or password manager, nor chrome and use a pin for unlocking. I think probably the best way to treat a device that you may not have in your pocket/hand all the time like your phone? The onboard Cayin music application is feature full and sounds awesome. It's a little quirky to find your audio files in the first run, but, looks great with cover art and a bewildering array of audio options for tuning the DAC etc.Super excited to finally have something that sounds unexpectedly superb! I'd forgotten what a sacrifice we all make with our cell phones and laptop standard 3.5mm jacks, *and* any Bluetooth based connection and it's nice to have something that makes me feel like I'm actually "in the room" again!I can post some pictures if any interest - but - hope this is of use to others! Will try and answer questions if needed but there are also some great reviews on the Headfonics website that helped me decide to buy this, along with some fantastic customer service from the insanely busy staff at the Akihabara location of Yodabashi Camera!

Cayin Wins! Vs DX230 and KANN cube.
I’ve owned The KANN Cube and dx220 and this player is better than both. Battery life is insane, interface is great and most importantly the sound is beautiful. I would call the sound signature more emotional, velvety than both the cube and dx220. The cube is a great player don’t get me wrong and so is the dx220 but the Cayin has the “mojo” for playback.Dx220 sounds flatter, dryer than Cayin but more holographic with a wider soundstage. The weird thing about this is that it pushes it too far out too my ears and starts to sound like an effect if that make sense. The Cubes top end is beautiful, separation is great but I still have to say the cohesive stickiness of the Cayin makes for audio honey. Classic music sounds vinyl classic not upgraded in a strange way, only in fidelity. Very soulful vibes coming out of this player. The Cayin edges the other players in future upgrades also with swappable DAC chip / amp stages. If you want a great headphone pairing buy Sendy Aivas plug into the 4.4mm and pretty much say goodbye.
