Mary Ellen Mark: The Book of Everything Hardcover – September 22, 2020

Mary Ellen Mark: I have admired her, and envied her. Admired her for the courage and heart it took for her to enter into so many stories so compassionately—even ones that may have horrified her. Admired her for her perfect and unflinching eye and her ability to find beauty everywhere. Admired her for her sheer photographic skills. And envied everything that I admired about her. I have treasured her Aperture monograph for many years. Today I received "The Book of Everything," a three-volume posthumous retrospective edited by her husband Martin Bell and just published by Steidl. Because I ordered early, I got it at a fraction of the current huge asking price, which I could have never afforded. It is as huge as its price, weighing in at over 10 pounds, and it may be the most lavish photography set I have ever seen, even surpassing Salgado's "Genesis," a true labor of love. What an amazing treasure it is!

It's an understatement to say that the many photos in these three volumes comprise a wonderful selection of Mary Ellen Mark's photos. Also, they were taken in various locales throughout the world. I own a few of her previous books and was a fan of her work from way back, and this collection certainly does justice to her legacy. The publisher did a terrific job with the printing process, too.

I’ll be eating instant noodles for the rest of the month but well worth it! Amazing three volume retrospective of Mark’s impressive body of work. Fantastic photos in gorgeous edition. A must have.

These three volumes are so good in every way. The print quality, paper stock, binding curation, etc. are all worthy of the name on the book. Even the packaging is superior to what we normally see for photography books. Steidl really did this one properly. This collection should sit proudly in the libraries of all who appreciates fine photography books.

More than I expected. I have been her life-long fan and it's so complete and huge and beautifully put together
