LOVE!
We bought this for our daughter for Christmas! This was the only gift she asked for. Easy to use & easy to teach her to use! She is 7 and loves it!

Not worth it
I made a bad choice of typewriters! The print is too light I think because the ribbon won't advance like it should. I'm going to have to get an electric one. Bummer!

Disappointed!
The Royal Classic was advertised with a carrying case. No such case was received. Where is it? I suppose I'm to use the box it arrived in as a travel case. Very tacky!

What I needed
This typewriter was just what I needed. It types very well and came with extra ribbons. I purchased it in red and so beautiful to look at as well. It is well built, and also has the automatic spacing bar that my old typewriter didn't have. I like the way it was packaged to prevent any damage upon delivery too. If anyone is having problems with the ribbon when typing, just make sure the color switch on the right side is on the correct setting. It's worth the money spent. I have to give it 5 plus stars and would give more if it had a higher rating scale.

Yearning for the old days
It will make you yearn for your old Smith Corona typewriter (why did I get rid of it). The keyboard layout is from the 50's, if you use a computer you will hit the wrong key, LOL . Examples: ' is over the 8, ! is next to the right shift, + is over the 1, etc. Makes it a little awkward. The typewriter itself wasn't set up right and I had to tweak it (I repaired teletypes in the Army so I knew a little). I hate the cover over the ribbons, it's hard to get off, not a good design at all.The typing itself is good. I think my disappointment is really in comparing it to the smith corona I had in the 70's which was a real solid machine.

Don't take your chances
I read all of the poor reviews and still decided to purchase any as a Christmas gift for my 9-year-old son who really wanted an old-fashioned typewriter, mainly because there aren't many options out there and I felt like I should be able to trust what I thought was a reputable brand name. The ink that came installed was dried up like I had read, but I bought extra and the unopened one that came with it was fine. The problem was not that, but that the ink ribbon constantly bunches up while you're typing- like you can't type more than one sentence without it happening. Also, one of the paper advance knows fell off and there's no getting it back on. It types really light near the left margin and then darker as you move to the right. This was all within not even a day of use, mostly by me trying to get it to work properly. I'm returning it and not even going to bother asking for a replacement. You're better off keeping your eyes open at a flea market, garage sale, or estate sale for a true vintage one because this is junk. You can buy a brand new cheap laptop for the same price.

Be aware of the Font Size
I bought this as a fun way to take my writing 'offline'. Reminds me of my typing class days in high school. Perfect for someone who is learning how to type. As with all manual typewriters, you have to press the keys with more confidence than a computer keyboard to make sure the hammer strikes the page hard enough to leave the ink impression. It took me a little time to adjust to the return arm; it hangs low and if you don't keep it raised up on return of a line it will hit the top of the case. Just something you'll quickly adjust to.
