Not for use on Lee press
I bought this because it was a tad cheaper than the Lee universal shell holder, and I needed this size for my Lee Classic Turret. In the end, I had to buy the Lee shell holder anyway. The Hornady shell holder snaps in place and holds the correct size brass fine. But the hole at the bottom for priming is too large, so the priming ram doesn't quite auto-center and ends up shaving little bits of metal off the sides of the primer. I had a lot of trouble getting them to set all the way in too.So if you have a Hornady press this is probably great. But for a Lee press, if you prime on the press, just buy the Lee shell holder.

Useless for RCBS-LEE-Lyman Ram prime tools
Be careful when using shell holders of one manufacturer (RCBS) and another, in my case Hornady/Pacific!! There is a .010" difference in thickness .5010" vs .500" between the Thicker Hornady than the thinner RCBS which could lead to either sizing or bump issues when loading bottle neck cartridges. If you use either the RCBS desk top priming tool or the RCBS Ram Prime, the smaller cup posts are too loose for the hole of the Hornady shell holder, not a happy situation and possibility of a cocked or misaligned primer exists. The same issues iOS there for the Lyman ram prime and the Lee Ram Prime. My Hornady shell holder came with my 38 special extra die set but I use either a Sinclair or 21st Century hand priming tool for that situation. it pays dividends to measure you shell holder thickness especially for cam-over or lack of it whennn initially setting up your dies especially the sizer/depac die.

Hornady Universal Shell Holder
All say, "universal", - no. I don't know which is possibly the one with the QA issue; however, for use with my Lee product, this Hornady holder is off center. So, when used the prime press discovered that when had a "catch" and slammed a primer in due to that (use the press to avoid ignition as with the manual option). So, - I noticed if I rotated it, it then found a center. So, - when I get a chance since does not appear reordering would solve this; I will get an expensive high quality tool file and open up the 1mm it needs so as not to catch on the press cup of the Primer tool.

Quality, True 9mm. Shell Holder
Excellent shell holder actually sized for 9mm. Bought this to replace Lee shell holder which is sized for 9mm or .40. This is handy if you occaisionally accidentally get a .40 mixed in with 9mm cases. With the Lee shell holder the .40 will go right into the shell holder resulting in a sudden stop when you try to size. The more exact size also helps with alignment so the reloading process is a little smoother.

The best fitting shell holder for 223
The test is to see if you can wiggle the brass or the shell holder once it's installed in your presses. It holds the shell really well with no wiggle, and it also doesn't wiggle on the ram of the press. The case is aligned properly every time.I was ripping off the rim of the case with the old shell holder, I haven't done that yet with this new shell holder. It appears it fits 223 much better than other "universal" kits.

Not for .45 Auto (ACP)
I received the #31 (Hornady part #390571) shell holder for the .45 Auto Rimmed. I'll be honest and say that I'm not even sure what that is, but the #31 is MUCH too large for the .45 ACP shell casing. The part that I was looking for is the #45 (Hornady part # 390606), but that doesn't appear to be available. Seems from the reviews that perhaps the Amazon buyer is mixing these two part numbers up since some people say it fits and others say it's too large. So, Amazon's description of the part is correct (45 Auto Rim), but beware in purchasing this item if you're after a .45 Auto (ACP) part.

Worth It
It fits perfect in my Lyman Tmag turret press. It’s a tight fit in the Lee single stage press though. The Lee press isn’t as smooth overall so that’s what I’m chalking it up to. It’ll hold a shell like it’s supposed to so I’m happy in that regard. It holds a shell with less wiggle than my RCBS holder but your mileage may vary.

My first.
This was my first Hornady shell holder. I didn't think shell holders needed or could be improved and still be so convenient but this one was. I only speak for the .44 special (shell-holder #30) My .44 special brass fits nice and snug in there and you can see a little bit of bowing in on either side of the top section of the holder that allows more contact with the rim. I didn't have to keep my finger on it for half the ride up to the die so it wouldn't slip out of alignment just enough to hit the edge of the die opening like other holders sometimes do. I'm really liking that Amazon carries a lot of firearms accessories now. I often go to their site first.
