They provide so much great information and you just can't beat the price
Do yourself a favor especially if you are a woman: get your hands on as many do-it-yourself manuals whether it's Reader's Digest or Family Handyman books. They provide so much great information and you just can't beat the price! You can learn so much not only about how to do things yourself and save a lot of money, but you can see if the unscrupulous contractors are doing a good job when they come to your house to repair something. It's not just a book, it's an investment! I guarantee you that you can find something that can be used immediately! The book was carefully packaged and arrived as advertised.

Great Reference
This is a great reference book for those of us who grew up without learning (or needing) these skills. Really helps to identify the right tool for the right job.

Average
The title really does sum up the book. However, in the attempt to cover both aspects of a broad topic the book fails to cover either aspect in depth. You do get color pictures of many tools and hardware products, although the focus is on tools and products used for home repair or remodeling. Additionally nearly all of the skills covered focus on home repair and remodeling.I find that other books from Reader's digest give better coverage of home repair and remodeling. Although possibly useful for a novice, I find that the tool coverage is neither interesting nor exhaustive. The split personality and homeowner focus leaves this book with an average rating.

Another Reader's Digest great book!
My family and I have been subscribed to the Spanish version of the Reader's Digest for many years. I have enjoyed every one of their publications and The Book of Skills and Tools (Family Handyman) does live up to the Reader's Digest reputation. I recommend to have a copy in your personal DIY library. Fully illustrated, it explains anything you need to know about almost every tool or technique out there. I recommend this great reference to every homeowner, crafts enthusiasts, contractor, artist, trades, or teacher.

the how-to handy illustrated reference @ the top of the heap
This is a beautiful book, made by and for those who love tools, craftsmanship, and doing it right the first time. As a former carpenter and general building and remodeling contractor, I've seen and read a lot of how-to books. I have to say, I am truly impressed at the breadth and depth and accuracy of this book, and as a bookseller by trade now, I have to say this is one book that is staying in my own personal library! The photos are excellent, the illustrations superb, the explanations clear and understandable. Buy two, one for your workshop, and one for your library...and maybe an extra to loan your neighbor or father-in-law, so that you don't have to part with your own copy!

Lots of details and pictures
Great explanation of all the tools, and shows pictures for techniques. covers all the basics, and starts from the very begining, even describing different kinds of nails.
