Dumbo [3D Blu-ray + Blu-ray]

Decent film, 3D was pretty good, not great.
It's a nice production with very good VFX. Nicely cast, visually imaginative. I would have liked the 3D to be used to better effect.

This poor elephant just can't take flight
This poor pachyderm of a movie had the deck stacked against it from the very beginning. I will say that when the teaser trailer came out it was one of the best that I've ever seen. The beuatifully haunting version of Baby of Mine and the always dependably stunning Tim Burton visuals gave me all the feels, and I was ready to jump on board with this remake. The changes to the story were appropriate and necessary given the racial undertones of the original so that wasn't the issue. In this version the focus is on a circus trainload of freshly created human characters to give Dumbo context, but what you end up with is another glaring example of how it's VERY hard to sit back and relax watching a movie which is effectively about the plight of circus elephants and the abuse they endure. Don't roll your eyes because I'm not trying to politicize this review with some tree hugging philosophy, but there's just no way around it. They retired elephants from the circus for a reason and this movie is a less than gentle reminder even though they try to handle it the best they can. Let's say that little ones are too young to understand what I'm talking about in the "grown up" sense. The movie is still incredibly intense and for kids that are older there's no way you're going to get out of a sit down explanation when you finally turn it off. If like me you watch everything Burton does simply because he's a master of his craft then there are some enjoyable moments and flickering elements of magic, but even these are eclipsed by the elephant in the room.

Saws this movie playing at my doctor's office
I wasn't aware of a Dumbo movie with real people in it and of course recognized Colin Farrell. It was pretty good....just sorry I had to pay to watch it since it was from 2019! If I hadn't paid for it, I'd probably watch it again as there was a lot to see and I probably missed some things.

Fantastic movie. However, you need to understand what you're watching.
I absolutely loved this movie. Wonderful update that still stays true to the original, but with added storyline. HOWEVER, I've heard and seen too many comments about this not being a children's movie and this movie being dark. First off it's Tim Burton, DUH!!! Also, the reality is the way animals were/are treated in a circus is dark and violent. Obviously in the original it's easy to just see it as a cute cartoon, but here they made it look very lifelike and I can see how that may add to the trauma, especially for kids. I don't know if I'd recommend for all children, depends on level of maturity. With all that said, I still highly recommend the movie. If you love Tim Burton, you'll love this. If you love elephants, you'll love this. If you loved the original, you'll love all the nods to parts of the original (storks, Casey Jr song, pink elephants, jerks in audience, clowns, mouse, etc). Definitely worth a watch... Or a purchase so you can watch on repeat like I intend to! Haha <3

Love It!
When I was little I remember watching the original Dumbo from Disney and it was not my favorite. The two things that I did loved about it was the elephants were set free and also it had a message in about embracing what makes you different. This version, I loved from beginning to end. It even had parts that made me cry. A lot of people have said that this movie was very dark...So was the original. In the original, Dumbo was bullied from the moment he was born from the other elephants. They tried to hide his ears and that right there was a sign that he wasn't accepted for the way he was. All the animals were caged up most of the time. In my opinion, this new version showed just how dark the original really was. I prefer this version over the original. Great storyline and I love how the introduced each actor into the movie. I love the actors that they chose for each role.

True to the original spirit and theme of "Dumbo".
I liked this film a lot.Think that the usuage of LIVE ACTION AND the WATER-COLOUR EFFECTS of the bits of Computer Generated Illustration (CGI) was JUST RIGHT.I did kind of miss seeing "Timothy Mouse" ,but MUCH ENJOYED seeing and FEELING the very well-played personal interactions between the Dad, the children, the she-roe of the movie and the star "DUMBO" and his "MOMMA". Lovely and heart-touching.

Oh come on, it's not that dark
Yes, it is dark. But the cartoon featured kid friendly things like animal torture, bullying, getting high/drugs, and implied racism. Dumbo has more friends in this version, so the story is actually happier just with less songs and a mature color scheme. The humor won't make you guffaw, but is still charming. The Land Before Time is much darker than this movie. Tone wise it's comparable to Edward Scissorhands.CGI can be hit or miss, especially with animal characters. Here, it's very much a hit. Dumbo is absolutely adorable and extremely expressive. The human cast is ok, Sharon Rooney does a really good job at playing the mermaid and singing "Baby Mine". The sets are amazing, definitely have the Tim Burton touch. Definitely worth watching, even with your kids.

Learning to fly
Another month, another live action remake of an animated Disney Movie. In this case, it's the elephant you'll believe that can fly. Dumbo. Directed by veteran individualist director Tim Burton. It's 1919, and Holt Farrier [Colin Farrell] returns from World War one to the circus where he worked with his family before the war. But times are changing. His wife is dead, and he has to bring up his son and daughter on his own. He can't do his old act because he's missing an arm.His daughter wants to be a scientist. The circus is struggling to keep going, as the ringmaster [Danny DeVito] knows full well. But when they have a new baby elephant, one with incredibly big ears and the ability to fly, opportunity knocks. Via an offer from an entrepreneur [Michael Keaton ] that might be too good to be true...A girl who wants to find her own path in life? Eek! It's female empowerment again! But it's not just about her. It's about an odd looking elephant. A trapeze artist [Eva Green] who has clawed her way up to find she's not quite at the top as she thought, a man looking for new purpose in life, and a man struggling to adapt to changing times. It's about empowerment for all of them. Learning to be who you are, and then you can take control of your life.Once you get this point, and it's easy to get it early on, this is a pretty emotionally engaging film and a nice watch as a result.Beautifully designed and directed as you would expect from a Burton movie, it gets past the short running time of the original by covering all that quickly, and then getting into the entrepreneur plotline. Some characters are thinly sketched. Colin Farrell does struggle to find much depth to his. But Michael Keaton and Danny DeVito are such good professionals as to be able to mine real depth in theirs. The cgi is decent. There's some very mild jeopardy, but you'd have to have a really whiny kid for them to be bothered by it. And it's just a very watchable spectacle, with a nice message to it all.A good bit of work from a reliable director. Definitely worth a watch. The dvd has the following language and subtitle options:Languages: English, Greek, Portuguese, Spanish. It's also English audio described.Subtitles: English, Greek, Portuguese, Spanish. The disc begins with a few trailers, which can be skipped via the next button on the dvd remote. They turn up in the sneak peeks section of the disc anyhow. And as ever with DVD's from Disney, there are no extras at all.

DELIGHTFUL LIVE REMAKE OF A DISNEY CLASSIC
Was, myself, brought up watching Disney classics such as the 1941 version ofDumbo....a movie that still has the charm today as it always has.Disney again revisiting an old favourite -The film receiving mixed responses from many critics, some saying despite its brilliant visual content it lacked the 'soul' brought to the screen of its 1941 original. All I can say having now watched it, is, see it for yourself, I believe the majority will love it.Returning to his family, Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell) after the war (it's now 1919) with the loss of his left arm, he finds that his wife had died during a flu-epidemic, his children Milly (Nico Parker) and Joe (Finley Hobbins) had been cared for by his fellow circus family headed by friend and owner Max Medici (Danny De Vito)Holt, can no longer do the horseback entertainment he once did and is offered the job of caretaker. The circus has fallen on hard times, Max, looking for extra attractions had bought an elephant Jumbo who turns out to be pregnant.....well, when born a baby elephant would attract interest. However, when Jumbo Jnr arrives he has unusually large ears, Max isn't sure of its potential. However, Holt's children take to the young elephant and play with it, when taunting Jumbo Jnr with a feather the young elephant leaves the ground chasing it, when Milly and Joe try to tell their father what happened he, of course, dismisses it.However, the young elephant is introduced to the circus ring helping te clowns put out a staged fire but becomes trapped many feet above the stage, Milly climbs the ladder with a feather in hand, this tempts Jumbo Jnr now renamed Dumbo after an earlier incident to fly away from the danger.Meanwhile in an incident whereby mum Jumbo only protecting her child is seen as out of control and will be sold back to her previous owner, minus the young elephant of course.News travels fast, entrepreneur and theme-park owner V. A. Vandevere (Michael Keaton) along with partner and trapeze artist Colette Marchant (Eva Green) turn up to see the spectacle for themselves.Vandevere soon offers Max a partnership and a home for his troupe, however, the entrepreneur only has his eye on the dollars young Dumbo can earn for him, and will not prove a reliable associate. At the theme park, it is discovered that Dumbo's mum is there, a chained-up attraction, Dumbo pines for the mother he'd been cruelly separated from, will they now be reunited? ....not if Vandevere has his way they won't.With much drama to come, will there be a happy ending for young Dumbo? An enjoyable watch that those remembering the charm of the original should avoid making comparisons.A truly great family watch - enjoy.

Flying High
You cannot compare this "live" action film to that of the original animation version. The story line here is slightly different and doesn't have any songs. It is a lovely heartwarming story. The scenes where Dumbo flies are quite brilliant and it is good to see the villains get their comeuppance. Special effects have come a long way from the early days and they are here on display. Enjoy it with the family, friends or just on your own.

Could have been a 4 star!
A very good atmospheric film. Beautifully made and directed. Unfortunately Collin Farrell is totally miss cast in the lead role and it spoils the film. He is wooden and out of his depth. But children will love it for its visual affect. RJC.
