An INCREDIBLE retrospective!
Received "The Art of Ian Miller" yesterday and am simply blown away!I've been exposed to some of Miller's art over the years (primarily through older UK paperbacks), and when this book was announced I did a quick Google image search and saw that his work looked even more up my alley than I would have expected. So I eagerly opened the box from Amazon yesterday and ended up getting completely lost in this book for almost an hour. It was a darkly magical experience! This book has great production values: perfect size and form factor, nice paper, logical presentation of Miller's dense and hyperimaginative illustrations, well-printed and color-corrected reproductions, etc. For overall effect, I'd put "The Art of Ian Miller" up there with the Underwood Frazetta trilogy - it's just that good!I don't know if they give out World Fantasy Awards for art books, but if they do "The Art of Ian Miller" deserves one.

Purely awesome!
Hard to give this anything aside from an exceptional rating as i've always had pretty high opinions of his art. There is enough diversity in the included selections that you are almost certain to encounter pieces you've not yet seen.An incredible collection of art that i for one, am extremely happy with!

I fell in love with Ian Miller's artwork
After getting a copy of Realm of Chaos: Slaves to Darkness in the late 80s, I fell in love with Ian Miller's artwork. This book is a great primer to his artwork for those who do not know who he is.

An excellent book
As an overview of Ian Miller's career as an illustrator this is indeed a wonderful collection, with excellent production standards. To have such a book about Ian was well overdue and this one was well worth the wait.

Mesmerising
I bought this book for artistic inspiration and to branch out my style... well... wow... what can I say. The style of Ian Miller is truly unique - impeccably fine detailed ink pen technique with a myriad of textures of his own invention. It is truly mind-boggling... mesmerising is the word I'd use - you can't tell if you like it, are scared by it, or just can't stop your eyes tracing the drawings. I have truly spent hours trying to mimic some of his patterns... or just trying to cast my eye over every detail of his more complex pieces. The book itself is very very good quality - hard back, nice cover, excellent print quality on pages (no compromise) and a few words from the artist or associates to provide some context.I would say if you're looking for 'normal', 'conventional' or 'safe' fantasy art, this is not for you; if you want something which'll give you a totally new paradigm, this is for you. It is also not a book I'd give out lightly - I think some of my friends would be quite scared or intimidated!!Very very good, I will be poring over it for hours more...

Good overview
There's some stuff that doesn't work for me but his best art is incredible, especially his depictions of Lovecraft's Arkham and Innsmouth and Peake's Gormenghast. His castles in general are second to none.I wish his cover for Worlds of Fantasy & Horror Summer 1996 had been included because I think that's one of his better pieces.

Review
I bought this book out of curiosity as I had not previously come across the work of this artist. I am not sure what I expected, but this book far exceeded anything I could have imagined. The imagery is not for the faint hearted and it messes a little with your head by looking into imagined Worlds of horror and disturbing dream like fantasies. The technical ability of this artist is awe inspiring, pushing ink work beyond the realms of the ordinary. I love the fluidity of the images and the colour plates are incredible. The book is excellent quality, and has an expensive feel to it. This book will appeal to art students and anyone interested in developing drawing skills or just interested in fantasy art. It is not an instructional book, and is sparse in explanation; something I would have liked more of but still an excellent addition to an art book collection. In some ways I am thankful I cannot imagine the dark and disturbing World of Ian Miller, but I also really admire his work.

A good collection of Ian Miller's art
I would have liked to have seen more of his work for H P Lovecraft illustrations, especially At the Mountains of Madness.
