Nimitz Class

Good surprise..
Like the details and explanation of the equipment, weapons, and lingo of the crew and personnel of the ships involved. The fictional history kind of too close to the line, but I was desplease of the reaction of the US president about an US aircraft carrier being destroyed by an atomic weapon.Looking forward to read the 2nd book of the series.

Nimitz Class
This story about a battleship which suddenly vanished by nuclear fission, leaving behind the other ships in its group, is rather scarey and at the same time very convoluted and sudden. The US Navy attempts to solve the mystery, bringing the cause down to one man and the problem of what to do with this killer when he is finally caught because he is a very intelligent fellow, and heretofore involved with the Navy in a positive way. Admiral Morgan is the main character in the book along with the President and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, as they pursue this murderer through the oceans. It is a gripping book and at times funny because Admiral Morgan is a definitely unique and powerful force both in his ordinary life and as the main man to find the murderer. As a Democrat I do not agree with the Administration's point of view, but that is par for course, and makes the book a bit more spicey. I have read it three times.

Just like Clancy's Hunt for Red October
Being a former Navy Submariner, I can attest that this "limey" (Royal Navy guy) got it right. An acquaintance who had red Patrick Robinson's books, recommended them. Nimitz is book 1 and I'm now on book 2; binge reader I guess. Anyhow, he writes with the in depth techie stuff like Clancy did. Robinson's character development is excellent with some of the key roles carrying forward to subsequent books. The story line is full of unexpected surprises, which kept me reading long into the nights. If you loved, and are missing Clancy's original works, check out Patrick Robinson. I don't think you will be disappointed. Start with this one, done in 1997 and envisions taking place in a 2002 that didn't have 9/11 as the disaster of the century. Enjoy!

Pretty good for a first novel
Not bad... I'm hoping he'll improve with experience.Let's start by recognizing that it's his first novel in the fiction arena. So I'm giving him a bit more leniency than I would a more experienced author. The plot is fairly dense and the twists are sometimes surprising while still maintaining believability. The characters are meaty and fairly life like. He really loves his secondary characters so that they comes just as much to life as the main character does. His technical descriptions are poorly meshed in with the story line so as to make them annoying.

Start with "Nimitz Class". The author's books build on the previous books.
Very knowledgeable author. The best of several other contemporary authors of submarine based tales.

A fun technical thriller
A reader of Nimitz Class may sometimes find it difficult to keep in mind that the book is fiction, because the military and political details seem so realistic. The US military officers are strong and exciting characters. The author has made good use of excellent military advice, particularly about the ways of the British Navy. There's a low-level background of preaching about keeping a strong military. Some parts of the story do strain credibility. For example, principal characters move in international venues, easily using English everywhere. But this is a minor objection, easily suspended. The book is a great technical thriller, with lots of mysteries and surprises. I especially enjoyed the details of running through the Bosphorus underwater.

Fooled again
Bought a previous book from the same author and it was terrible. Quit In the first few pages. This book seemed different. I should have known better when reading the 50 pages of why this book was so well researched and the who's who of military advisors. Nope, it still sucked. All seems to go well then he seems to do his own research on dodgy Internet sites. In one instance he states 20% of naval aviators die horrible deaths in flying accidents. Even during WWII that attrition rate would trouble commanders. A Tomcat crew avoided the death by accident and successfully ejected. The pilot was flying a couple of days later. Never mind trashing a jet pilots are not allowed to fly after an ejection until they've successful medical tests because of the violence of the action. Spine compression and concussion being foremost. It just got worse. It's so frustrating when reviews are comparing these authors with Tom Clancy and Vince Flynn etc.

Terribly researched and written.
Sigh, could have been a great book, but so many errors throughout. First off, you can pinpoint the source of nuclear material by sampling the fallout. Second, you only get a five star rank during peroids of war, and the chairman of the joint chiefs is a 4 star rank and not 5 star. Third, the Kilo which features in alot of the authors books was a dog.it wasnt the super advanced killer depicted. Fourth, the description of the nuclear device by the 'expert' in the book mixes up an implosion device and a gun device. No major power would have this type, and all are implosion based. This book is so badly researched and make so many pacing/factual issues not worth your time or money.

Not for me
Its always rather surprising to see how many positive reviews this book has received, having never read anything previously from this author I thought this could be a good read. How disappointing many times he repeated the same so call facts, I never felt engaged by his style of writing, so much so I gave up.I would only seek out this author when I wanted to nod off asleep.

Enjoyable but Scary Story
A well written sea story but sometimes a bit too technical for me. The author's experience shone through and he was able to carry the story well to create an enjoyable book. The premise scared me and I did worry what would happen if there was less cooperation between nations in solving the crime. I enjoyed it so much that I'll be buying more of his books.

Nothing under par as usual
Unfailingly penned once again. A genuine page turning gritty novel of the heroes of the USN submarine service. Have enjoyed all of the series that I have read so far. Just brilliant..
