Jean de Florette & Manon of the Springs

Just what I wanted . . .
Needed an English translation of Maurice Pagnol's two novels.I am trying to read them in French, but I am not fluent in French. I was getting impatient because the story is so good. I have a French version on Kindle, which is great because I can click on words (and sometimes phrases) to get translations. But there doesn't seem to be an English translation in Kindle. So I ordered this used copy.Really nice translation: simple, clear, and accurate. The used copy was advertised as being in "Very Good" condition, and it was. Paper slightly (SLIGHTLY) yellowed, but no spotting. Pages clean. Binding firm.VERY happy.

Very Good Read
I saw both movies in late 80’s- early 90’; they’re now unavailable on Netflix! The books fill in so many details not included in the films. I bought the book as a last resort but am SO glad I read it!

Greek tragedy told with earthy humor, warmth and compassion
A plot line that is Greek tragedy, yet it is told with such humor, warmth, sweetness, compassion for even its villains. Pagnol transports you to another world and time. His simple, direct, and yet utterly unexpected descriptions of the physical world that is Provence makes you feel that you are right there, in the mistral, the storms of summer. It is a joy to read. I took this two-novel combo paperback with me on a 1-week mountain summer vacation, and I read it every chance I had at least 10 or 15 minutes. Hours by the pool, 10-15 minutes at a time while in line for something, waiting for someone, anything. JdF leads right into the Manon book; they're almost one novel, just in two volumes. I gave my copy away to a friend after I finished because I want someone else to experience the magic of these Pagnol novels. That's why I'm writing this review, and I hope you'll pick this book up, too, and see for yourself.

Epic story
This is the best piece of literature I have ever read. Or watched: the movie(s) are even more enjoyable than the book but the book gives more details. This is the story of how we destroy ourselves when we turn inward and away from the joy God has created in us and for us. It is the universal human condition.

Lots of characters that you will follow throughout the novels.
These two novels were wonderful! I didn’t know what to expect and found myself entertained from page one till the end. The story is full of colorful characters who are well developed by the author. There were moments of humor and moments where I wanted to cry at the foolishness of man. I highly recommend these books (there are two novels) especially if you enjoy a wonderful, well thought out story.

book follows the same path as the movie
had seen the movie first but not the jean florent part that added some needed background for the rest of this very entertaining book

Its story telling at its best
I love the books, especially J de Florette. Wore out my first copy & decided on this double, which was grand though the cover could be a better quality as it wanted to bend in the heat. A tiny issue. The story is just my idea of Southern France, so much better than the film.

Iconic stories of Provence .
Two great stories by the master , Marcel Pagnol . Jean's fatal struggle to find water and the reaction of the villagers when Manon cuts off their supply are high points of each book . Very well translated .
