Zojirushi AFFB-19SAXA Premium Thermal Carafe, 1.85 Liter, Brushed Stainless Steel

Amazon put the glass thermal carafe inside a paper bag to ship. Luckily, it didn't break when it arrived. The thermal carafe look and feel high quality, and keeps my hot beverage hot for hours.

This is the best quality and largest carafe you can get on the market right now, in my opinion. Zojirushi products are high quality and this one is no exception. This carafe was able to hold freshly boiled water for about 12 hours in tea-making temperature, in 24 hours the water is still lukewarm. The glass core technology retains the water heat, unlike other carafes which are only made of steel and cannot retain the heat as long. My only issue is its appearance: this size only comes in one color and nothing else. Cleaning the interior is a bit difficult too, but you can stick a cleaning brush in there.

I love this thermal carafe. Now, I can brew a whole 10-cup Chemex in the morning, and enjoy it throughout the day. A few times now, I've made it at 7 in the morning, and it is still drinkable/warm enough to enjoy after lunch and beyond (if it lasts). This Zojirushi carafe was the final piece in my coffee ritual: sourcing great beans, using an amazing burr grinder (the most important purchase in this equation), mastering the pour over technique and timing, immediately transferring the concoction into the Zojirushi. I was a bit worried to read about how some of them were not holding the heat. That clearly seems to be a correctable error (usually by replacement), that is hopefully not too common. Another troubling thing I saw in these Amazon reviews is the complaint about the top of the carafe and the condensation/liquid getting stuck in it. This common complaint was more concerning than the one about it not holding heat, because poor design can really turn me off to using something. Bottom line: this condensation concern is NO CONCERN when you actually see the top. The top easily snaps apart and back together. You can clean and air dry every single piece of this carafe. Of course, I don't use the Zojirushi daily. It is my weekender, vacation day, or my friends-coming-over carafe. I love the button "CLOSED" and "OPEN" markers. The rotation mechanism on the bottom: ingenious. You can put this in the middle of a table, and not fuss when someone from any side wants to grab hold of it. Love it. I'm giving this 5 stars because it really does bring me enjoyment and allows me to drink or serve all of the coffee I carefully prepare. If only they could make it without as much plastic (there is very little in the Zojirushi, and I think it's used primarily due to its durability); to be crystal clear: the coffee, stored in the glass interior, is never in constant contact with plastic (only when it is poured out). Thank you, Zojirushi, for such a wonderful thing. Also, if you're considering this size or the smaller one, go with this one. When properly preheated with hot water, I see no difference in heat retention based on how full the carafe is.

This carafe is great! I struggled with whether to take away a star for difficulty cleaning & water sounding like it was trapped in the lid and in the space between the brushed steel & black plastic bottom, but since it kept my water boiling hot for 12 hours, I just love it! Pros: Looks good Keeps liquids hot for many hours - but make sure that the button is on the "closed" setting. The first day I had left it on the open setting and the coffee did not stay hot for even 4 hours. Then I had tested the carafe by boiling water in my tea kettle and putting the lid on the carafe making sure that the setting was on "closed." I found that after 12 hours the water was still too hot to drink. I then tested it the next morning (roughly 24 hours later) and it was luke warm. I read another review that said it kept liquids hot for 24 hours & that was not my experience. I would call it cold, but definitely not hot. Easy to use and pours nicely with no drips. Cons: I wish the interior were wider to make cleaning easier. You will need a water bottle brush to clean the inside. The first couple of times I washed it water was audibly trapped in the lid (i could hear it when I moved it around) and water droplets were still coming from the space between the brushed stainless & black plastic. It had been drying overnight so the water should have been gone. It was a slight annoyance, but not enough to take away a star.

Pros: ● Glass liner does not alter taste of the contents. ● Glass-lined vacuum insulator highly effective; holds heat for several hours. Cons: ● Zojirushi America is a company that does not stand behind its defective product. ● Lid cannot be properly washed and cleaned. ● Design flaw in the lid causes it to stop functioning (gets stuck in open position) after a few months of regular use. ● The pour stream is not smooth; sends splatters in directions other where you are pouring. ● Cannot pour the last of its contents without removing the cap. ● Does not hold 2 liters, only 1.85 liters (advertised as such). ● Brushed steel covering not tight at the seam; poorly constructed. ● Swivel on the base is an annoyance with no real value to me; although some people might like the rotating base. The company, Zojirushi America, sells an inferior product in this carafe and does not stand behind it at all. Besides the fact that you cannot clean it, the cap on this carafe has a major design flaw which causes it to fail after just a few months of operation. This is not detectable within the first 30 days when Amazon would take care of it. After 30 days you have to go to the manufacturer and they will not take care of it. The cap, which is already a negative because it cannot be washed, only rinsed, has a stopper that opens and closes activated by a button on the carafe handle. The problem is that after a few months of use the mechanism inside the cap that opens and closes it gradually over a few months becomes skewed and reaches a point where the stopper opens so crooked it stays stuck in the open position. You then cannot close it using its open/close button. This is a fatal design flaw in the cap. When it reaches that point the only way to close it is to actually unscrew and remove the cap, then physically tap the stopper. That dislodges it from its stuck position and its internal spring closes it. This is not acceptable performance of a product and the company should, at the very least, replace the cap. The company will not. But even if they did, that does not solve the long-term problem of that same thing happening with each replacement cap after another few months of use. If you buy this product you are doomed to failure by the design flaw and then having insult added to injury when the company does not stand behind the product. You can't clean it in the first place. That is an immediate problem from even before its first use, but pales in comparison to the fact that the cap will just stop working eventually. So another design flaw in the cap is the fact that it passes coffee through a hidden channel that cannot be accessed to clean. There is no way to clean this carafe. You can only rinse it. You can pass cleaner through it to hopefully remove some of the coffee residue, and then you can rinse that. But there is no way to get a sponge or a brush into all affected places, so it cannot be washed, only rinsed. That is a bad design. Unfortunately, many companies' carafes are plagued by similar inability to clean designs. You cannot pour liquid with the spout tipped beyond horizontal. Do do so will send liquid into other parts of the cap that are not connected to the channel that leads to the spout, so coffee will com out of other orifices in the cap. onto your counter, or your floor, or you. Not good. And since not all of the contents will come out of the carafe without pouring beyond horizontal, you are forced to remove the cap in order to pour out the last of its contents. Also bad design. The glass container inside is good; small but good. But why they designed a container that does not hold a full 2 liters I have no idea. It is inconveniently too small. After brewing 2 liters of coffee, only the first 1.85 liters will fit into the carafe. The remaining 0.15 liters I'm either forced to use right away, or just pour down the drain, and with my expensive coffee, pouring down the drain is a tragedy. I make Specialty Coffee that I buy from an association of coffee growers in Colombia. The coffee is transported to the primary plantation from various small plantations all around the country, it is roasted at the main plantation, and FedExed to its customers worldwide. This coffee is made affordable by their organization and processes, but it is still ultimately rather expensive. On the high end, I sometimes make a 2-liter batch that costs almost $34. For each liter of coffee I use 80 grams of beans, so that is 160 grams per 2-liter batch. The priciest of the coffee is usually about 21¢/gram, times 160 grams, is $33.60 per batch. The the more typical coffee is about 7¢/gram. Far less expensive at about $11.20 per batch, but either way, not cheap. So I need a carafe or other non-stainless steel dispenser to hold that expensive coffee. For some reason the stainless steel carafes use steel that imparts its own metallic flavor. Totally unacceptable. I still don't understand why this is. I use a stainless steel gooseneck kettle and a stainless steel filter, neither of which imparts any steel characteristics whatsoever. But carafes seem to use some different kind of steel that does. So my carafes/dispensers must be glass-lined. This carafe is glass-lined, albeit inconveniently a bit too small. It does manage to keep the coffee hot for many hours. The glass lining is the only virtue of this carafe. But a carafe without a lid is no good. With its built in defects in the cap, all of the virtues of the glass-lining are negated. I paid $52.46 for this carafe. It is absolutely not worth the money even at a fraction of that price if the thing breaks down after a few months and the manufacturer, Zojirushi America, refuses to make good on the purchase. My recommendation is to completely stay away from this poorly designed product, and save yourself the agony and misery of attempting to deal with Zojirushi America when the product eventually fails.

2013 UPDATE - Although we have had problems with the "sticky button" one of our people figured out how to disasseble and clean. No more problem. We have 3 of them and all are still working well. (What has it been - 3 years now?) Original Review: I bought this carafe for our office, at an engineering firm (with very picky people). It works excellently. The swivel base is nice, but not a big deal to me. The push button open/closed lid is outstanding. (I haven't had it long enough to see if it will start sticking. I have no problem with the idea of having to clean it periodically.) As to temperature retention, you pour hot coffee in in the morning, you get hot coffee out in the afternoon. I have noticed that the ability to retain temperature is a function of the "fullness" of the container; two cups of coffee will not stay as hot as a full pot. If you want specifics, I would estimate heat losses for a full pot of liquid to be around 2 degrees per hour. For example, if you pour in 170F coffee, you'll get it out at 150F ten (10) hours later. (Testing a series of these carafe's temperature retention abilities would be an outstanding elementary or middle school science fair project!) I would expect 1/2 of a pot of coffee to lose about 3 degrees per hour and 1/4 pot to lose about 5. I doubt you'll find anything better than this. The only thing I cannot attest to is the longevity of this item. It's obvious that you can't drop it (we engineers do like "virtually indestructable"), the "sticky button" issue has been documented (I'll have to wait and see) and I also wonder about the handle's attachment to the rest of it. (I think this could be retightened, if necessary, but that may be challenging). Bottom line: If you need a thermal carafe, stop reading and buy the d*mn thing!

We have owned a previous edition of this Thermal Carafe for probably close to 20 years or more until it finally failed. We loved it so much that we wanted to replace it with the same or similar product. This carafe came close and the only difference is that the engineering has improved and is even better than our old one. What has improved? the lid in the old carafe needed to be partially opened in order to pour the coffee which meant heat could escape. With the new carafe there is a button that opens the pouring spout only - a much more elegant solution and less steam can escape keeping the contents of the carafe hot longer. Both my husband and I absolutely love this new design!

It keeps hot only for like 1.5-2 hours then my tea loses most of the heat. Also, the last portion of the tea, it spills somewhere from the lid instead of the actual spilling hole, which is weird.

La jarra está muy buena, mantiene mucho tiempo el agua caliente y buen tamaño casi 2 litros. Lo malo fue la manera en que lo empacaron, ya que solo viene en la caja de la jarra y por dentro no tenia protectores(pero llego bien)

Ainda não tem 1 ano de uso e enferrujou tudo na emenda e embaixo!! Aço inoxidável enferruja? Tô achando que é falsificada.
