Time Travel on a Budget!!
As I said in myΒ New York City in 3D: A Look Back in Time: With Built-in Stereoscope Viewer - Your Glasses to the Past! Β review, London in 3D is a much better viewing experience. This volume in the "Glasses to the Past" series has the same thorough captions and clear stereo-view reproductions, but in a more comfortable, compact size. The book is not so awkward to handle, and the non-padded covers make it firmer, so it is easier to position and grip. As with all of the books in this series, it makes a great introduction to stereo viewing for the novice, or for the advanced fan, simple and carefree access to these hard-to-find historical images of late 19th and early 20th century London.

A Handsome Stereoscopic 3D View of Old London
This is a very attractive book of Holmes type stereoscopic photographs of the city and it's historic buildings. Many of the buildings are still there, today, of course, so, one might say, what's special about looking at the old photographs. But, when you see the people in their quaint clothing of the period in 3D, and you realize you are seeing them as they were, real as life and in depth, you feel the thrill of looking into the past. The descriptions of the pictures are well written and informative. The book is an excellent buy at the price.

Spectacular 3D
I really love this book. The viewer is built into the front cover, so you hold that up while you turn the pages. You have to relax your eyes and then all of a sudden they kick in and you are seeing wonderful 3D images of London's past. I went through the whole book right away but I know it is one that I will be getting out every so often to see the pictures again. I also have the other 5 of these books and have enjoyed all of them. I highly recommend this book if you want to see 3D images from the past.

Disappointing
I was a bit disappointed with this. I thought it was a book with the stereoscopes reproduced inside. But instead it is a bunch of cards. That would be fine, and perhaps better even, if they were printed high quality, but they're just not. They are printed poorly. I don't know if it's the type of printer used, or paper, or that they printed from really low-res scans (I'm guessing 150 ppi or so), or maybe a combination of factors, but as a result you can see the dots prominently. None of them look sharp or detailed, even though the original stereoscope cards were (I know because I've seen, and own, some of them). If you have no experience with real stereoscope cards, you might enjoy this set more. But if you're a 3D enthusiast, stay away from this, unless you can get a cheap used one, and just like to have everything.

Fun book but some stereo cards are hard to see ...
Fun book but some stereo cards are hard to see clear 3D because of the way they were originally shot. The book explains there were two methods to make stereo cards. This book does contain beautiful reproduction photos that are crisp and clear.

Excellent 3D Pictures of Old London
This book is has many excellent stereoscope pictures and interesting descriptions of old London. The built in viewer works well and the book size is just right. I also discovered that you can look at your own stereoscope cards by using the book's viewer and holding the card in front of one of the books pictures.

Fabulous buy!
Amazon.co.uk made me an offer I could not refuse by selling this book at half price. I even got a copy for a friend who lectures on historic London, and he was equally delighted. As the 46 sepia views included both interior and exterior shots of old London landmarks from Crystal Palace to Hampton Court, as well as fascinating street scenes such as Cheapside and Petticoat Lane, there is something of interest for everyone. It is not often that you can see a view of old London in 3D without the aid of elaborate stereoscope viewers...so this is both rewarding and easy to handle. As I am one of those who mastered the art of viewing these twin stereoscope images by adjusting my normal vision I was able to enjoy this book without the clever device that is attached to the rear flap. A definite one for your collection or a very novel gift for anyone interested in London or photography. Clever built in viewer
The clever simplicity of the built in 3D viewer is the icing on the cake for this book. It only takes a few moments to find the correct viewing distance and then it is time to immerse yourself into some seriously old time photography. Marvel at what has changed over the years and what has stood for many decades without mutating into a glass and steel architectural signature piece. This is fascinating stuff and is a great way to subversively get children interested in history by giving them something highly visual that jumps out at them building on the current vogue for 3D films. The 3D viewer will easily stand the test of time as it is sturdily made and folds out of the book.

London in 3d
This book was bought as a gift for a very discerning reader of all kinds of books and he loved it, was really impressed and could not put it down. It was passed around the whole family who spent several hours looking through it. We all found the photographs beautiful, and were introduced to a world that has been left behind, a world facing new discoveries of which we,one of life's ordinary families, in the present day ,can look back on with pride to our forefathers who accomplished so much of which we are the benificieries. This book is not only fun to explore for adults but , in my opinion, will provide a historical adventure for our young. Maybe these books could be introduced in schools? I do believe that whoever's concept it was to develop these picture books is a thankful and thoughtful person towards the whole of humanity, encouraging us all to delve further into our past , (using fun,)so that we can embrace our present ,and our future ,with open arms. I ordered the Brian May book of the village but am still waiting for it with eager anticipation...............................thankyou, Annie Pasteau

Fun trip into the past
Fascinating look back at London's past. The only reason I didn't rate it 5 was that because you're looking quite closely at the photos through the lenses, in some of the photos you are very aware of the dots used in the printing process to create the photos, and I couldn't help thinking the 3D effect would be better if they were less apparent. I would have thought a finer resolution would be possible with modern printing techniques.

The Past comes to Life!
A truly beautiful book! Very robustly constructed, and well designed! Initially, I thought the '3D' stereo effect wasn't working very well, but that was my impatience- it is actually very well conceived, and the 3D effect is superb. Just read the instructions on the page of the stereo glasses. I have collected stereo photos for years, and they are a wonderful way of experiencing the 'moment'- it really brings the subject into life. A great book, highly recommended!
