Great book. The title tells a lot
Great book. The title tells a lot! I recommend this book highly. Its ONE OF MANY antidotes to dysfunctional, conventional, rushing robotic medicine. He's a Naturopathic doctor, not an MD as the author lising states above.. One of the covers of this book has a picture of a big round pill with a big dollar sign $ engraved in it! Also very telling. He also has good videos on youtube. He used to work for Enzymatic therapy brand of supplements and formulated many of their earlier supps. Now he has his own supplement company called NATURAL FACTORS. I trust this man.

A 'must read'
As a layperson who tries to stay informed, I can't say enough good about this amazing book.Dr Murray has managed to cover a huge amount of truly helpful health information as well as practical suggestions for viable alternatives to conventional drug therapy. At the same time, his writing is entertaining enough, I not only enjoy what he has to say, he has left me looking for more.i.e. Having been put on a statin by my doctor and suffering enough ill effects, (muscle pain, loss of memory, sleep disturbance etc), to become truly alarmed, I can relate to Dr. Murray's conclusions about the 'cholesterol myth'. In fact, they bear out what I had previously determined from my personal experience with this particular drug.To whit, about eight months after my doctor insisted on putting me on lovastatin, I came across an article in Time Magazine's April 2010 issue about Women and Statins. The article described the side effects I was experiencing in detail and then some. It also went, very briefly, into the cholesterol controversy as well as the fact that, even though the FDA has known about this problem with the statins' effect on women for years, they have not only failed to warn physicians, to this day they keep insisting that the evidence is strictly anecdotal and they have no hard facts to back it up.For my part, I went straight to my doctor with the Time article in my hand. After he read it, he advised me to discontinue the lovastatin immediately, which I did. By his own admission he hadn't heard anything about any problem with women and statins and had been taking what the pharmaceutical sales representatives were telling him as gospel. At the same time, I have made a point of discussing this with every older woman I know. Every last one was prescibed a statin even though, like me, none had any history or the slightest indication of heart disease. From what they told me, they all experienced the same side effects I did, or worse, and, with or without their medical doctor's advice, not one is still taking the statin. This book not only points out, with plenty of thoughtful documentation, that what you don't know about this particular subject can seriously hurt or even kill you, it also tells you what you should be doing to protect yourself. In my day job as a social worker, I am absolutely horrified by the sheer number of prescriptions my individual clients are taking, especially the seniors. They bring me their pill bottles in shopping bags that are plumb full, or else they hand me a lengthy handwritten list or a multipage printout from their pharmacist. For the most part, they appear blissfully ignorant of what is actually in the medications they're supposed to be taking, let how they interact with one another or whether they're even doing any good for whatever condition they have; and they're convinced that they're absolutely necessary.(I'm not talking here about necessary medications for Type 1 diabetics, cancer survivors etc, you understand.)On the other had, the latest high buck 'wonder drug' for 'insomnia, 'restless leg syndrome', 'heartburn', 'anxiety', 'depression' or the newest 'cure' for some catchily named disorder being pushed in current television drug commercials is sure to be on their list. As an example as to how bad this situation is, one such heavily promoted drug was Avandia, which was recently pulled from the market because it was found to be dangerous. Another was Vioxx about which no more needs to be said.I am so impressed by this book, I've ordered a copy for my doctor, another for my best friend and a third one for my sister-in-law because I'm not only not about to loan my own precious copy to anyone else, even my own family.I devoutly hope that Dr. Murray will keep updating this book periodically because "What you don't know..." deserves to become a medical classic. And it probably will be.

Great book with lots of great information t
While it's a tad wordy, he makes some very insightful and well researched arguments. I've long felt like taking a new medicine just released to market is as effective as playing Russian roulette with my health. I really liked that I had the opportunity to review the articles cited and come to a conclusion on my own

Another excellent alternative health book.
Even doctors don't know what drug companies don't tell them. This is another alternative healing and medicine book that should be in everyone's health library.

Another must read from Dr. Murray. This book ...
Another must read from Dr. Murray. This book is educational and opens your eyes to what is really going on in the pharmaceutical industry and how there are options to pharma pills.

The title of the book is a good tip off to it's potential value.
This makes a very useful addition to our home health library. There is a great deal of useful information. I prefer not to rely on only one source of information. There is a lot of useful information on the negative side effects of medications that can be found elsewhere, but is well organized and easier to find in this book.

Lot's of important information
This is a very important book that will help people understand why a lot of the modern treatment and medication don't help us and that there are alternatives out there if only we look for them. The side effects of medication are often horrendous and you are often not informed of them untill it is too late. The author starts out by giving a bit of information about the Pharmaceutical Industry and I tell you that only this bit will put you off medication and doctors forever. Still, he does agree that in some cases medication is necessary, at least till you can go over to natural food supplements. He also explains the differences between naturopathic and allopathic medicine.I have to say that the author although a doctor, not a writer, writes quite well and seems to be a person with not only a lot of knowledge and a doctor who has the best interest of his patients at heart but also a person with a lot of life experience. He sees people as a whole and gives advice on how to get healthy (and keep healthy) from all points of view, including mental wellbeing. I especially liked the bit where he says that truth passes through three phases: first, being ridiculed; second, it is fiercely and violently opposed; and third, it becomes self-evident. He goes on to say that each of us can help bring this progression into being in part by being "phase three" people currently living in a "phase one" and "phase two" world! It surprised me though that he advises children with lactose intolerance to drink soy milk and people in general to consume soy products. I think that there are doubts about eating unfermented soy..... he also advises green tea but according to what I have read green tea can have high concentrations of fluoride, so I am not sure that this is a good idea. As far as cholesterol goes there are also theories that it is not the cholesterol that causes heart problems and although he mentions that half of the people who have heart attacks or strokes have normal cholesterol he also says that the more LDL cholesterol you have circulating the more chances you have of a heart disease. A few pages later he says again that there is no question that populations with lower cholesterol have lower risk of dying of heart disease. As far as this goes read the book "Fat and cholesterol are good for you" by Dr. Uffe Ravnskov.Another thing I doubt is the advice to use Canola oil because it also doesn't seem to be healthy at all. It is confusing when one gets such mixed information.... Fish oil is another product that seems to be quite controversial. He does advise it but without specifying whether it is cod liver oil or fish oil. Some experts do say that cod liver oil is better than fish oil, others say you shouldn't take any of them.....This book covers a lot of illnesses and health problems like constipation, ulcers, digestion, headaches, arthritis, diabetes, cancer, menopause, heart disease and much more. A very comprehensive book and very much worth reading!

A lire absolument !
