Could be better, but still great.
Oh, man. I'm not sure how to rate this book. A four-and-a-quarter? five? four-and-a-half? Eesh. I'm going with five, just because this is one of those actually GOOD series which interests boys, who don't have the best range of engaging books right now. There are boys I know who hate to read, but love this series.I live in America, and was VERY excited when I learned there's a company that imports from Australia; the book's not out here until October 5th. I really enjoyed this book, but I would have made two changes; 1) I would have mashed the first three chapters into one. It would help the beginning flow of the book a LOT. 2) I would have extended the beginning of one of the chapters, as it mystifies the reader, and would be much better if it kept the suspense up a little longer.I read this book two times the first day I got it, a third time the next day, a fourth and fifth the next, and then just read it whenever I could wrest it away from my two younger siblings. If you are a hopeless romantic (not meaning love scenes, but drama) with a vivid imagination and a thirst for adventure and humor, as I am, this is the book for you.Again, this is an engaging and thrilling read, and it interests even my brother, who is not known for his biblophilia. Be forewarned, however; it does move a little slow in places, but that seems to just make the other bits even more interesting, especially the times when Will comes close to cracking. After all, nobody likes watching their mentor die.I was a little disappointed that the Black O' Malley was not really Sir Keren; it would have opened up quite a few possibilities if he had survived Macindaw, by some miracle. I mean, come on, a major face-off between Will and someone he thought was already dead? Still, the way he was forced to give them information was quite intruiging. I'm going to shut up now, and go and find that book to read it for the... eighth? ninth? tenth time?Bring on the tenth book! And the eleventh! And the twelveth! And the - you get the idea.

Love to hate it!
This one was an emotional roller-coaster. I went into this one wary because of the title, and I wasn't wrong. It was so good and I hate to love it!

A Terrific Series!
I purchased the first 3 books in this series for my pre-teen (now teen) to read on a long family trip. He reads everything he can get his hands on and was totally enamoured of The Ranger's Apprentice series. I began reading the books as well and find them wonderful. One of my favorite aspects is the description of the characters' thought processes as they deal with emotions such as fear, anger, irritation, embarrassment; the author describes responsible and viable strategies for his characters to become problem solvers, not only of difficult and scary situations, but also challenging emotional states. We were delighted to see that through Amazon.com we could purchase the last three books that had been released in Australia, but not yet in the States. Thanks, Mr. Flanagan, for these terrific stories!

One of the best yet
I'm a loyal Ranger's Apprentice fan. I devoured books 1-4, then waited for book 5 to come out. Oh, that wait! I ravenously finished book 5. After book 6, the wait time between books started getting shorter and shorter, which made me love the series even more. But enough of my love! Let's get to the point. For those unfamiliar to the series, Will is a King's Ranger in the medieval Kingdom of Araluen. Halt's also a Ranger, but he was Will's mentor. I say was not because he's dead, but Will's a Ranger now, not an apprentice (yes, I know the title says Ranger's Apprentice, but...) and he doesn't need Halt anymore. Or does he?That question is asked when Halt is struck by a deadly poison arrow. Halt is desperately in need of an antidote, and Will journeys to find one.I loved Book 8 a lot because Horace, the knight, joined Will and Halt's party. This RA book is funnier than the rest, in my opinion. Many chapters end with a joke. I loved how once again, Will tries to manage without Halt, like in Book 7. Plus, there are 2 story arcs to keep you entertained. And here's the part I loved most: one of my favorite characters from a previous book that I thought I would never see again returns! So, with that said, why 4 stars and not 5?Like a previous reviewer said, the first 150 pages drag a little. They're just tracking assassins, but it's handled well. I mean, who would think a little scrap of cloth could help you figure out so many things? The ending is good. It doesn't leave you begging for more, but I found myself wanting to read the tenth and final book, THE EMPEROR OF NIHON-JA already.I would like to give this a 4.5/5 stars, but I can't, so I'll have to give it a 4 since it doesn't deserve a 5. HALT'S PERIL is one of the best in the Ranger's Apprentice series yet.

Will Halt Survive?
Having driven the bogus religious cult known as the Outsiders from the shores of Hibernia, Halt, Will and Horace are in pursuit of of the cult's dangerous leader. Tennyson, along with a small band of his core followers, eluded the Araluen heroes in Clonmel and, although they managed to thwart his plan to gain control of Hibernia, Halt, Will and Horace won't rest easy until Tennyson has been captured and brought to justice. As they chase signs and rumors of Tennyson and his band of thugs across the sea to Picta and from there into Araluen, they are on constant watch for signs that the outlaws have passed before them. After a short side trip to drive a band of Scotti raiders back across the border, the trio manages to regain the trail of the Outsiders. But luck is not on their side. Tennyson's remaining pair of Genovesan assassins spot the two Rangers and the young warrior who accompanies them and set an ambush that may cost Halt his life. With Halt wounded and weakened, Will must find a way to complete the mission and save Halt at the same time.I am constantly astounded by the quality of the writing Mr. Flanagan has been able to sustain over the many books of The Ranger's Apprentice series. Halt's Peril is the ninth tale featuring Will, Halt and Horace and like each of the eight novels before it, the story is engrossing, taut with tension and peopled with characters that capture the imagination.

Um dos melhores da série!
Excelente livro, um dos melhores da série, super envolvente e rápido, não tem nenhuma enrolação, tudo acontece super rápido e cada capítulo te da mais vontade de ler e saber o desfecho.

Stunning. As usual.
Wonderful books. From the first to the twelfth. I did feel quite sad when Halt was shot, but I am quite proud to say I realized what was happening long before Will did 😊. For a moment (SPOILER ALERT)when they buried him, I thought he had actually died, and hated Flanagan for a few moments until I realized it was a feint. Great books. Love them.

Masterpiece
After 8 books with this "family", the title filled me with dread at the chance one of them may leave me.Tears were shed, breaths were hold and smiles were given at every chapter. This book has everything a reader may ask, and is written with such majesty that It puts the reader there, with the characters on every page, every moment. And it was wonderful.

Please don't die!!!!
I thought he would, the trickery is horrible, the start of that chapter when they trick you into thinking he's dead. I cried twice in this book.Once with sadness the other with relief.
