Trade Offs Worth it with Handy 25 y/o Conservative Study Bible
Well made for an inexpensive Bible, and the 11 pt. font is a luxury - a noticeable difference from my other Bibles. The dust jacket is so pretty I ordered a clear matte sleeve and kept it on. It looks very nice and well-protected, and I added tabs. The language is beautiful, and not at all difficult to read, either silently or out loud. I have come to prefer the KJV. It makes me slow down and pay closer attention. I am very pleased with this purchase. The only warning - and it is not a major issue - I would give concerns the notes (not bloated as are the giants of study Bibles publishers, who feel they must awe the buying public with the thickest, heaviest volume). For example, under the miracle of Jesus turning water into wine, the note says, with a straight face, something to the effect that Jesus probably didn't turn the water into *wine,* but something "better." Oddly non-literal for a very conservative study Bible.I can ignore a few dodgy footnotes. But denying Jesus turned water into wine at a wedding where people were drinking wine and the steward said "Wow, what great wine; in fact most people serve the good wine first and save the swill for when everyone is too drunk to notice the difference, but I know my wine, and this wine is the best wine ever," seems to be a daffy, offputting if not potentially limiting, editorial choice. So it bears the mark of its Jerry Falwell Liberty University editors, but that's no different from any other study Bible. The 5700 notes are generally helpful (considerably fewer than other study Bibles, whose editors seem to feel every verse requires some comment). By and large, the notes and introductory material are excellent, and, of course, conservative. There are very nice, bottom-of-the-page, brief doctrinal essays, each with a valuable practical application. I really found these helpful, and there are many. I also like the center column cross references, although they are on the scant side compared with, say, the old NIV Study Bible. Even so, it hits the most significant ones.I now reach for this Bible before the much bigger other KJV or other study Bibles now for very practical reasons. (My wife got the huge, pretty, new NIV one, although I keep the underrated Tyndale NLT Study Bible handy.)It's the form factor that I like. It's very handy for a study Bible, although that brings trade offs. There is virtually no margin space, so unless you want to write in microscopic letters, you're not going to fit in notes. Every reviewer complains about thinness of all study Bible pages. This does seem to have pretty thin ones, and my Zebrite highlighters show through to one degree or another (e.g. green is really too dark; yellow hardly noticeable). And, of course, it has neither the material or bulky heaviness of the current crop of mega-Bibles. Again, I am happy to make these trade offs for the way it handles and the ease of reading.

We have bought over 20 bibles, sharing God's word as a gift to others. I love the design, the added information like maps and dictionary.I love the break down of information made simple by the study section.

A Clear First Choice for King James Version....Truly Excellent Indeed!
My words that I write here cannot (truly) express the full picture of this beautiful Bible. You have to personally hold it, experience its "feel" in your hand (weight, flex, etc.) and look through its pages to truly appreciate its beauty and the quality of its construction throughout. The Nelson KJV (study) Bible has long been recognized as perhaps the "true leader" in study Bibles because of the clear and concise notes and references that it provides the reader, and even if you "know" the Bible I am sure that there are times that checking these notes is rewarding and enlightening (they are for me personally at least).I was in graphics/printing/publishing for my entire career and worked in some of the best high-end-quality publishing firms and have personally worked on and/or visually seen thousands of books in their production processes so I know instantly when handling or looking through or "at" a book just what went into it and whether or not it really is worth its price and worth having at your reach. This Bible is truly very well constructed and from high quality materials (and you can truly trust me on this). For myself personally, if I have my choice, I will never purchase a "hard cover" edition of a Bible for two very clear reasons (to me). The first is that because of its size and weight of all of its pages a hard cover copy is much heavier, also harder to handle and balance and hold because of the awkwardness of its rigidity created by the board covers. Also, the weight of the pages, through frequent handling and use, create very heavy stress on the binding and the volume itself becomes loose and "sloppy" at its joining the covers because the flyleaves at the front and back that hold it in the covers break down and will frequently tear the book from its covers. A flexible cover allows the entire book to take the stress of handling, etc. It's like a law of nature...flexible content attached to a rigid item (cover) something has to give, and the weakest point is the flyleaf, which is the only thing holding all that flexible weight in that rigid cover. Because the cover flexes the stress from the book is able to cross over or spread to the cover also and frequent handling/use will not do damage to the binding and weaken the book's attachment to the cover.}The paper used in this Bible is very high quality, very thin (which creates a lighter book for handling), brilliant warm white (easier on the eye), and for its thin-ness has No show-through (from the print on the other side of the page) and has a nice smooth finish making it pleasing to the touch. The type-face is 11pt and very clear and easy to read.... therefore you will have No trouble reading this. Also, while Christ's words are in color, the publisher has chosen to use a much more suitable sienna brown ink instead of the usual "shocking" red used in most Bibles. I really found this to be a wonderful touch. The notes, maps, concordance, etc., are all very clear and concise, and truly helpful to the reader when needed add to the useful value here. The bonded leather cover is tough, durable, and just "feels right" to your fingers and in your hands and its construction is first-class high quality. A final lovely touch (to me) is the silver embossing of "Holy Bible" alone on the front cover, repeated on the spine with added "The King James Study Bible second edition" with two beautiful flourishes and also the logo alone for the Thomas Nelson publishing company which just keeps the whole spine clean and un-cluttered looking. The Final Finishing Touch to the beauty of this Bible is the silver-edged pages, instead of the usual gold.... just so neat and clean-looking against the (in my case) black cover. Perhaps I personally see this silver/black combination as more masculine or something, I really don't know, all I know is that I find it most pleasing to my eye. One last note to you here is that I have recently donated my other KJV Bibles and, for me, "this is it...the choice for me"...I'm betting that you will also be this satisfied yourself after you have seen and have felt this lovely Bible in your own hands!{As a final note, I hope this does not come across as a "commercial"..... I am not writing this here to "sell Bibles", but I am wanting to convey to you just how well produced and finished this Bible is, and to express how pleased that I think you will also be once you have seen it, read some of it, and held it for yourself.
