Harlem World
Fine portrait of life in Harlem circa 1949, with a poignant and touching look at a people ravaged and broken by a gov't bent on discriminating, disenfranchising, neglecting and killing, through law enforcement and an underserved health care system, a population of color, already on the edge. Various portraits show black and brown people constantly under siege from state sponsored-neglect, corrupt cops, a non-existent social safety net with decent mental health resources, and most of appallingly, racism. In the face of all this, many turn on each other for the little that is available. Yet dignity, humanity, perseverance and hard work are the overriding tones and themes underscored by the master. This sounds waaaay too familiar and its 2021! Yeesh! Anyway, as a student of GP, peerless photo journalism and activism...highly recommended.

The Great Gordon Parks In Great Depth
What a gift - to have the contact sheets from the great Gordon Parks's Life Magazine story about a Harlem gang, along with the pages from Life, and the story behind the butchering of the story. Parks is one of the "greats" of the heyday of magazine photo journalism, but he was far more than that; FSA photographer, photo journalist, fashion photographer, film maker, author, composer, musician, and, sadly, little known today. Any one who loves great photography, and has any interest in great photographers and the work behind their works will appreciate this book.

A must read
Comments are useless. if you're browsing Gordon Parks stuff and are into photography and journalism, look no further and buy it. It gives you an insight on how his icon first Life magazine story was published and the process that led the photo editor pick the images.
