I *DO* like this watch!
I wanted a sport watch to monitor all my activities. This one does. It is multi-sport and lets me track my walking, hiking, rowing, treadmill, indoor bike, outdoor activities, weightlifting, PT, etc. There are 26 sports to cover. I found this had a bit of a learning curve. FIRST: when you click on open activity, or close activity - BE PATIENT! I expected instant stop and kept pushing buttons while the watch was still thinking. My bad! It takes a few seconds!! The sleep monitor feature is as accurate as it can be I think. You have to wear your watch for 2-3 hours before sleeping for it to get a baseline. It has helped me to see results from not using phone/tablet/TV in hours before bed and cutting out caffeine (iced tea) after 3 PM. The Garmin Connect phone app is very nice - full featured and I refer to it each day. I wear mine all the time - only have to charge it once a week or so, and it takes about 1-2 hours max to get to full charge. I charge it while I am taking a shower and getting ready to start the day. Charging does not interfere with my schedule at all. Another plus: as I have worked into my workout programs, I am seeing my heart rate drop from resting 88 to resting 78. How accurate is it? Shrug... but the relative drop is significant I believe. Lower resting rate = better shape, which is my goal. I can slow down on the stairmaster when HR goes above my max - it vibrates on my arm with message "high heart rate alert" - Nice. Also, LOL, it does tell me every two hours to MOVE if it senses I'm reading or sedentary. Funny story: it said move, I walked around house for 20 minutes and actually got a GPS printout of my living room! LOL It does give me the option to add custom workouts but I have not used that feature yet. I am still a little bit intimidated by how powerful the watch is. One weird thing: sometimes weightlifting is reading my arm movements as steps. Walked 8000+ steps according to watch but I know I did NOT walk that many. I did, however, spend over 75 minutes in weightroom doing chest/arm/back/free weights. This is a known issue if you google it. Not sure how to interpret?.... All in all, this watch is pretty darn cool, very helpful and I am glad I got it as it has helped me see trends that are reinforcing my hard work. Suggest viewing all the youtube videos for learning - the info that comes WITH watch is MINIMAL! Good purchase.

The perfect smart watch for somebody that doesn't like the idea of a smart watch
First of all, this thing is really durable. I can count it lasting so far. I work in chemical mftr facility and have done a bunch of different laborious tasks. I also volunteer as a for fighter and this thing can take whatever you throw at it Next, the whole 14 day battery life is what really sold me. Im not someone that wants to just not worry about battery power every day, or even every other day. So after like a week when it gets sort of Midway, i just throw it on the charger for like 30 min and it's good. The alarm is also really convenient. It'll vibrate and make a noise when I set the watch alarm. Really nice in the mornings if you have a hard time getting up. Yes, you can adjust what apps actually notify you. So if you filter it right, you won't have this thing vibrate every second when you have something come up on IG. GPS is great and also the sleep tracking is nice. Great for working out too, it's not heavy or too bulky. I came from a Casio watch before so obviously it's a major upgrade from a 15$ watch. At the same time, it was really hard to justify buying this at 180$. I gotta say that all the benefits really outweigh the costs for me. The solar one seems a little extra, but that red is 🔥. I don't think much could be any better for a watch. Great deal for a smart watch and a great addition to my day-to-day. I notice i don't look at my phone as much, which is a plus too. The upgrade is just a win-win.

When would a smartwatch with an OLED panel be a consideration?
The headline answer I give is - not likely ever! I am thoroughly impressed by this watch. The Instinct Tactical is my second smartwatch ever (first was Moto). My consideration for the next watch was specific, I wanted to have GPS, practical features, RTHR, great data analytics to review patterns, this watch fits the desire. Beyond the scope of expectations, what brought me in is the following: German Engineering - Top Notch Reputable company that has been in the business for a long time - very long Battery that can a really long time last up to 14 days (not tested, details of how I last 10 days below). Something that goes against the trend of the typical smartwatch buyers. Features that matter (not stuffed with what most WANT instead of what makes sense for a watch). I say, if you want to use your Apple Pay, or Google Pay, etc. Just pull out your phone... A little bit of coverage on where I'm coming from: Logical buying choice that will actually last longer than 2 years. The premise of smart watches that are appealing are the bright color OLED panel, touch screen, gestures, etc. All of these features use a ridiculous amount of battery and the idea of having to take a watch off every couple days doesn't make sense. You see, if you imagine any device with Lithium Ion having a maximum number of possible charges (ranging from 500 - 1500 charges) in addition to the quality at which these charges degrade WITHIN this lifetime, some thing that has to be charges so often just doesn't cut it for me, and it shouldn't for you either (phone and notebooks are different - we're talking smartwear technology). Things that REALLY are not necessary in the phone, only desired to be apart of the stylistic trends of those around you. This watch intelligently meets my expectations, and does so in a way that is different from the trend. This watch has a seemingly simplistic design, one that some might see as being a regular watch - they can think what they want. When I talk about this watch to people (like when I get notifications to the Instinct), a number of them were pleasantly surprised, and to say its a Garmin watch, they jokingly ask if it has GPS "YES", I say, as well as "... oh.. well can you track your bearings, ACTUALLY use the compass for navigation - use your watch to navigate?" ... "YES, YES". This watch has some really unique feats up its circuitry and I REALLY am so impressed by this design concept (no OLED, no touch, no NFC), it truly is unique and quite frankly, a surprise considering the functions of other watches in this pricepoint. The Tactical was an unrecognized surprised until later, it has a "stealth" function that will disable all radio functions (Bluetooth, GPS, etc.). BUT with having an onboard memory, it will maintain record of your steps, HR.. etc. etc. until you reconnect (not forever obviously). I cant speak for other watches, but because of the depth in the GPS functionality, features that are just really cool include detailed views of when the sun's position in the sky, when potential storms are likely to arrive in the area. I'm not an avid hiker, adventurer, biker, etc. I just go to the gym and work. This watch lasts for about 10-12 days, and I have monitoring running actively (every second), using the dark-themed watch face, and a quick toggle to turn on and off functionality that uses GPS on the menu slider. I HIGHLY recommend this watch if you are in the market for something if you are, or plan to be active, want some unique features as well as practical ones. Impressive data analytics of your stress, sleep, heart rate, step count, and other familiar trackers. I love showing off the functions of this watch when people poke with curiosity, I could (and would) sell this product for Garmin with a lot of joy. Its a 2018 watch, but honestly, as it STILL holds is price-value between $200-300, tells you something (a good rule of thumb). The 4 stars for the sleep tracking - I suspect that it uses your movement, HR and patterns between them, to determine your deep, light and REM sleep states. I think this area is tricky for all watches with this technology, as the difficulty in knowing independent without other technologies, is tough when one is watching a show before going to sleep - where movement is zero, and the transition to going to sleep has no movement. This can result in the graphs appearing as though I were sleeping. So for the stats that show that I was asleep for 10 hours with a REM cycle at the time I was bingeing the last episode of something before lights out, when I actually slept for 7-8.. it throws off my weekly, and monthly stats slightly. Its seldom when it happens, but still. It determines the likeliness of you being asleep in the smartest way with the best the algorithms could offer using just HR and movement. So I understand the challenges that most manufacturers have with this aspect *even fitbit and others with Sp02 tech*. Thanks for reading.

Absolutely best smart watch out there.
I bought this as a replacement for an apple watch that died after a year of use. I primarily had it for gps functionality to track my workouts. This garmin tactical is so much better in every way. The battery life is phenomenal compared to the apple watch which required a daily recharge. This watch can go for 12-15 days and charges fully in about 30 mins. Also the gps seems more accurate than the apple and the sensors seem better. I also enjoy the garmin app. The only thing it is missing is v02 max measurement capability, which i believe is available in the newer models. For the price, even being a little dated at this point, is totally worth it. Update 18jan2024: The watch is still rocking after a year of daily use. Battery life is still about 15 days. I recently purchased a concept2 rower with the latest PM5 monitor. Initially I wasn't able to get the heart rate working on the PM5, but after some googling realized that there is a setting in the heart rate widget that allows you to broadcast your heart rate via bluetooth to the PM5. Super happy with that functionality. Overall I know this is an older model, but I still recommend it over an Apple watch. If this one ever fails I'll definitely pick up the latest version. Excellent product! Update 3Feb2024: The battery is slowly dying. It has been draining faster and faster over the past few months, and is now down getting 1-2 to days on a charge. I went ahead and ordered the Garmin 2 Solar since it’s in sale for $250 right now. I have been super happy with this watch and will continue to use it until the battery fully dies. I am looking forward to its replacement as it has v02 max, a better battery life, solar, and other additional features. Thank you Garmin for making an exceptional product. 🫡

Best watch on the market!
So it' been almost 6 months since I've been using the Instinct and I can tell you folks I own a lot of different watches and of all the watchs I have, Garmin Instinct is simply the best. Below are some of the positive and negative points that I believe are worth mentioning if you are planning on buying one. Positive Points : - It is built to the U.S. military standard 810 for thermal, shock and water resistance. ( 100 meters water resistance ) - It has Altimeter, Barometer, Compass and Thermometer ( measurements have been pretty accurate ) - It has a monochrome, sunlight-visible display so the screen is easily readable under sunlight. - It has GPS, GLONASS and GALILEO ( most of the Fenix series and handheld gps units on the market do not have all them together, so this is a great feature ) - Its battery goes for 14 days in a smartwatch mode ( I was tired of charging my previous smartwatches every single day or two. So, forget about charging your watch every single day when you get the Instinct ) - It's lightweight. ( Folks you will never realize that you have this watch on your wrist most of the time as it only weighs 52 gr ) - It has all the sports that I need - It has a Track Back function. ( This is a great feature if you believe that you might get lost during hiking or trekking or if you wanna create your own route in a trail and wanna make sure that you get back to the base camp safely. ) - It has a storm alert ( if you are out in the field or hiking, then this watch will warn you if there is any radical change it weather ) - It has sunrise and sunset - It can show the moon phases - You get notifications and calls from your cell phone. - It can actually vibrate every hour just to warn you. - It measures your heart rate and body battery - Its strap is pretty long so that you can also wear it on your coat or jacket easily. - You can change the song on your cell phone from Instinct. - It can also show your GPS location. Negative Points: - I wish the screen would be a bit bigger - I wish it had solar charging. - Vo2 Max ( I'm not big on this at all, but still wanted mention it ) I own s3 frontier and active 2. They are all great watches but after a while, you will get tired of looking at a smartwatch that has the same display with your cell phone and charging it every single day or two. So Instinct has pretty much all the features that a smartwatch can provide but with a cooler display that doesn't tire your eyes and 14 days of battery. I also own Casio Rangeman GW 9400, and I think it is also one of the best watches on the market as well. It has ABC and Solar charging features which are pretty awesome. But considering the GPS and many other features of Garmin, I would still go with the Instinct.

Amazing Smartwatch With A Couple Quarks
I've now used the Garmin Instinct for two months. It's really an amazing Smartwatch! Samsung and Apple are a bit too flashy for me. To sum it up: Pros: Amazing battery life of 10-16 days depending on use. GPS accuracy is very good. I love the Garmin Connect software. It logs everything. And the badge system is very fun. Price point is great for a good smartwatch. I have put this watch through a lot in two months and it has held up great. Cons: The altimeter and Barometric sensors are on the bottom of the watch. When working out, sweat can give you Inaccurate readings. The internal memory is small and activities fill up the space in about two months. You just need to sync and then clear the watch, but still. The weather app is a bit goofy. I'm still not sure how it gets data, but it is definitely not perfect. Overall, a very solid watch for the price point!

Garmin with G-Shock Styling
This watch rocks. I've been using it for a month now and I'll list out what I like and what I don't like and hopefully you find some use in that. Likes: -Visually appealing (White Color, it's a nice matte/off white color) - GPS is fairly accurate (Been testing GLOSSNASS & Gaileo, check out the forums and see what works best in your region) - Very minimalistic (Con for some) -Battery Life is phenomenal. They claim around 14 days I believe and using GPS every other day for a 3-5 mile run I still get about 10 days before I re-charge it. - Works with the Garmin Connect app which beautifully lays out all your data in a variety of ways -Durable! I have a bad habit of catching my watches on every doorknob (idk how I manage it) but the glass is unscathed thus far and despite getting the White colored watch I haven't had any issues with colors rubbing off on it. -Affordable -Perfectly sized case. It's not obnoxiously large/tall like the Fenix or Suunto watches. Dislikes: -Almost too minimal -Steep learning curve, the instructions tell you what the buttons do but that's it. -No Connect IQ (service that lets you make and buy custom widgets and faces like other smartwatches) Those are my only gripes. If you're looking for a sporty watch that you can beat up, measure accurate runs with, and that's fairly low profile then this is the watch for you. If you're looking for a dedicated all-round smart watch with some sportier features (or any features for that matter) then you may look around some more ( Garmin Vivoactive series, Fenix's, Suunto Baro's, etc) Lastly, I will say that I sold my Galaxy Smartwatch to essentially trade "down" for this watch and I don't have a single regret. I found the Galaxy's heart rate monitor was finicky and would stop when there was any moisture on my wrist, ie sweat. Also, I enjoy the simplicity of the Garmin. It doesn'y feel like I'm wearing a small phone on my wrist that I have to check every so often. It's a performance watch. If you buy one I hope you enjoy it as much as I have!

Smart watch for people who dont want smart watches!
I dont really write reviews, but figure I would to help people who are undecided like myself. I'm am not a technology person at all, especially for things that do everything for you. I bought this watch mainly for its GPS capabilities and back to start function for hiking. And it performs very well. It's nice not having to have your phone out. I don't use the steps heart rate functions but work as should the activity tracking does wear the battery down fast so I leave it off but it charges very quickly on my samsung phone charger block. Having the weather function, sunrise and sunset and storm alert right on the watch is awesome. The text notification alert and preset replays is great as well. I read reviews and had friends with this watch that said its hard to figure out and takes to much time, but after a few YouTube videos and reading the instructions took all of a half a day to really figure out. Again if your looking for something that does it all for you and want a lap top on your wrist it's not for you. I feel it has too many widgets and deleted a lot. I also use it for things I didnt think in would. Example I teach kickboxing so I can upload my class for the day with timer and intervals in the my workout wisget so I dont have to keep looking at the time and add notes on combos and things i want to do. Durability: I've owned it 2 weeks and wore it every day since I'm full time firefighter teach kickboxing and also do construction on the side. This watch has taking a beating so far and still looks new somehow. Will update later down the road. Comfortability: I wore g shock since military days back in 2000 and this watch feels like a luxury compared to it cannot even tell I'm wearing it. The band is soft and flexible, I've seen reviews people have had skin reactions i have not. The watch face is great no where near as bulky as I expected and better than g shock for sure. Bumped and hit the face many times still no scratches. If you like fancy looking watches may not be for you but for what the watch is intended for dont think you would be. But the coyote tan is very nice. All in all it's a awesome watch especially for price point. Again if you want a smart watch with full color maps and a computer on your wrist not for you, you want a comfortable gps watch with basic capabilities and the necessities for hiking or working out and telling time this is the watch. Last thing if you lose your phone a lot like me the find my phone function is great!

All round fitness tracker, great value for money, not ideal as a smart watch
EDIT: After a year of usage, I have absolutely no complaints. There is a minor issue, the sync with iPhone is a bit flawed, you have to connect, disconnect and then reconnect to sync successfully but this is a small flaw, you have to press a button twice, that is all. For me, the watch lasts a week before I have to charge (even after a year) which is good. I keep bumping the watch on hard objects and the watch is built sturdily. The edges of the watch screen tend to accumulate dust which I have to wash daily. Otherwise, this watch is a gem. Highly recommend. I am writing this review after 4 months of usage. I bought this watch for 21,840 ₹, the price in India right now would have increased because of higher tariffs. I use this watch primarily to track my runs/jogs. The watch is capable of tracking a coterie of activities like running, swimming, cycling, rafting etc. It gives you information on how much time was spent on the activities, calories burnt & the distance covered. It also has a real time heart rate monitor. I cannot speak of its accuracy as I haven't had a benchmark to compare it with. The watch also tracks your sleep. The watch also looks sporty and fashionable, if you dig that sort of thing. I got it in Seafoam rubber blue. The watch is supposed to be used in conjunction with the Garmin Connect app on your Android/iPhone. The app is easy to use and provides a lot of detailed stats that would be of interest to you, sleep time, stress levels etc. Again, the accuracy is difficult to ascertain as I don't have a baseline. You are supposed to connect the watch with the app via Bluetooth and it works flawlessly everytime and takes a minute to sync a days worth of data. The more activities you have, the more time it takes to sync. It's made out of a material which is sweat resistant unlike leather. You do need to wash the watch after a workout to remove the sweat. The watch is waterproof up to a certain depth and I wash it daily with tap water and have faced zero issues. I did face an issue wherein I had to factory reset the watch once because the watch screen was constantly changing. In my four months of usage that only happened once so it didn't bother me that much. I have hit the watch accidentally on hard surfaces quite a few times and the watch is built like a tank, so no damage at all. I only have to charge the watch once a week and it lasts for that duration easily. I use it for 1.5 hours to track activities everyday. I presume most of the battery is expended because of GPS usage. I don't use this watch as a smart watch and I don't think it is meant for that. Although you can keep it synced to your phone, I choose not to do that because of privacy concerns. Overall, I higly recommend this watch as a full fledged activity tracker. I wouldn't recommend this if you are looking for a smart watch although it could be used as one.

Great watch, loaded with features!!!
This watch is the best! The features for tracking stress, sleep and body battery have been really helpful in managing my day to day fight with PTSD. The body battery is an interesting concept that helps me plan my days based on my energy reserves and checking them against how I am actually feeling. It is surprisingly accurate. Sooo many more great features! Love that it is not metal, but rather a very light weight, non metal case. Im allergic to nickel so that takes the worry out of it. Really wish the Solar Tactical was available when I ordered it... this one is good but I seem to have to plug it in once a week to recharge it. After having higher end watches that recharge on kinetic motion or sunlight I liked not having to charge my watches or replace batteries. But I wanted to try my first garmin watch and decided to go with the non solar to see if I liked it. I Doo!!

Love This Watch!
I've had a number of different smart watches over the years including FitBits etc. This is without a doubt the best so far! I tend to use it for tracking walks and cycle rides (putting both into Strava), as a step counter and of course as a pretty nice watch for everyday use. Simplicity to set-up and get going, pairing with your phone is also easy which of course then allows notifications of texts, alerts and incoming calls. Battery life seems to be good - overall I'm delighted with the watch without a single negative. It's possible to have a multitude of different watch faces, then each chosen face can also be customised further - nice! When I bought mine Amazon were doing an incredible price on the 'Coyote Tan' colour, making it an absolute bargain as well....what's not to like?

THE absolute best digital watch ever !
I'm not exxagerating for this statement. Even if one doesn't use much or none of the added apps and nearly endless possibilities, the Garmin Instinct blows out ANY digital watch (and I have many) out of the water. Let me make it clear that the Instinct is in my opinion NOT a smartwatch but rather a digital watch with added smart capabilities (no silly touchscreen or fancy colors) and a very sturdy and tough one - a G-Shock on steroids so to speak. (but comparing the Garmin to a Casio is like comparing a Spaceshuttle to an old Volkswagen). The display is ultra crisp with big, bold digits which are extremely easy to read under any but the absolute worst (dark) light condition. For such, the Instict has a evenly cool white/bluish backlight that can be set to different brightness levels, different durations and even to "always on" if desired. The display can also be customized to personal preference showing the most important data in different manners and styles. The best part is, that the Garmin's display can be set to either "positive" or "negative" style. So the question which one to get is no longer a question but a matter of mood and choice. Let me tell you that the "negative" style is so crisp, clear and bright that it will beat 90% of the positive displays out there and that means truly something. Having instant access to up to eight(!) running simultaneously (!) countdown timers, stopwatch, altimeter, barometer, compass, moonphase, sunrise and sunset makes the Garmin so much more versatile than competitors and that is without even using one of the countless apps for GPS use. The Instinct can totally work on its own, no connection to a smartphone or computer is ever needed, unless you want to create a route or observe your trainings and activities in detailed graphs. All in all I can't praise the Instict highly enough, either you are an active sportsman or you just like the look and versaility of a digital watch - you won't find any better in my opinion. I would give this watch 10 stars if I could and that is something I rarely ever do.
