Works well
I bought this item over 3 years ago, and it is still in good condition... (I don't know why I decided to write a review now - 3 years after getting the item (●'◡'●) )

If it is cracked and/or leaks liquid/oily emulsion, do not use it any more, may be unsafe for kids
TL;DR1. If the board is cracked and/or liquid/oil is leaking, do not use it any more. The liquid/oil contains organic solvent, wax, and metal particles that may pose a hazard for small kids.2. Try not to let kids step on it as it will break/crack.I have an old one of this that was accidentally stepped on by my kid. I didn't realize it then but I did notice some liquid/oily emulsion coming out from the side of the doodle board.Today I had the time to open the back of the board. The liquid/oily emulsion that I saw came from a crack at the back of the display panel. The back of the display panel smelled like motor oil and the liquid/oily emulsion was everywhere.I wanted to know what the liquid was. According to wiki, "The key element of the toy is the magnetophoretic display panel, filled with a thick, opaque white liquid containing tiny dark magnetic particles. ...... The liquid is formulated so that the floating particles can be pulled through it in response to the magnetic forces, but not due to gravity.[1]".I was concerned if the liquid was toxic as my little ones and I have touched it and the toddler may have put it in his mouth. I searched and saw another parent having a similar question for a broken magnetic doodle pad. In the thread, someone quoted from How Stuff Works that"To do this, the liquid has special properties:The liquid is thick - This prevents the magnetic particles from sinking, so what you have written stays at the front of the display over time. The liquid is water, glycol or organic solvent/oil-based, and has particulate thickeners:waxes - olefinic polymer, olefinic copolymer, waxfatty acid derivatives - fatty acid amide, dextrin fatty acid estermetal soapThe magnetic particles are dark, small and fine (about 10 microns) - This allows them to be seen easily, to stack up and to be nearly unaffected by gravity.magnetic oxides - black magnetite, gamma-hematite, chromium oxide, ferritemagnetic alloys - iron, cobalt, nickelDye is mixed in - This provides high contrast to the dark magnetic particles.white pigment - most effective (concentrations of 3 to 10 percent) and most commonly usedcolored pigments - in some Magna Doodles".It seems that the liquid/oily emulsion that leaked from the board may contain some organic solvent, wax, and metal particles that may pose a hazard for small kids.

Great from 18 months
Our child is about to turn 2 years. Honestly if we were to rank every toy from 1-through whatever number, this will rank 1 by both my husband and I. This is our house favorite. Our boy is not drawing anything that’s pictured in the description of the toy. But in the last six months his motor skills and creativity have gone through the roof by using this toy. As soon the “letter of the day” segment comes in Sesame Street he will run to grab the board and start writing/drawing. He just started talking legible words. But already started writing alphabets. Since this toy is for 3+ we do watch him and discourage putting the pen in his mouth. He draw/write on this board for a couple of hours daily!

Overall good buy or gift!
The images advertised show the "ink" looking a lot darker than it actually appears. It erases well enough but you will have to go back and forth quite a few times to get it completely clean. My kids love the different shaped magnets that come with it. And it also fits well on their toddler-sized laps.It doesn't seem as thick or sturdy as other magnadoodles I've encountered but it's been holding up well so far. Overall, I'd buy it again or give it as a gift to another child.

Totally Fun - until you want to get a magnet out of the side
My 3 year old and 5 year old love it. Who wouldn't? This toy is always a good time. The problem with this design is that the 4 shape magnets are VERY secure in the side. So much, that my 3 year old can not get them out, and my 5 year old is only successful 1/2 the time. When we keep it at home on the play table, it's no problem, we leave them out. But traveling - I'm unable to help while driving.

Just like a Magna-Doodle
This is a perfectly serviceable magnet drawing board for the price. A lot like the Magna-Doodle I had as a kid. Some people have pointed out that the writing doesn't stay dark for long, but that doesn't bother me--it's for my toddler to scribble on, so it really doesn't matter. I guess it wouldn't work so well if you planned to use it as a way to leave messages to other people in your house, a la Friends.

Fun for toddler doodling
I bought this for my 2 year old after seeing how much fun she had playing with one at a friend’s house. It will keep her occupied for a good chunk of time. This particular one we got I believe is defective because when you wrote on it, it fades very quickly and is very light, like all the little magnets separate. The one our friend has doesn’t do that.
