Absolutely the best bang for your buck in a dual sport helmet under $100
I did extensive research on an inexpensive helmet to purchase for riding off road/trail on my KLR650. I wanted something comfortable, and safe, but didn't want to worry about dropping it or scratching it all up like I would with my Shoei Qwest. After watching several video reviews of different helmet brands, I committed to the GMAX GM11D in Titanium. My Qwest is matte black in medium. I did like GMAX recommends and measured my head again to determine that I should be in a medium in the GMAX also. When the helmet arrived (a few days earlier than expected) I was pleasantly surprised by the style and look.I'd like to remind anyone who negatively reviewed this helmet, this costs under $100. The standard features on this helmet, including the cool max interior, could easily put this in at least a $200 range. You can notice minor blemishes in the shell, but nothing I wouldn't already expect. When I first put on the helmet there was a bit of pressure near the front of my hairline, and directly to the rear of my head. Many reviewers will describe the sizing on this helmet as more for a rounder head. I have an oval shaped head, and knew that prior to going into this. After knowing how popular this helmet was I had to find out for myself. I pulled the liner out and, with the back side of a spoon, pressed the Styrofoam down just a tiny bit in the places I felt pressure. I reattached the liner and viola! Perfect fit. This helmet actually fits a tiny bit looser than my qwest, but that's probably more the shape of my head. The padding isn't as dense either, but another reason I wanted a dual sport helmet is for venting in the summer months. I love my qwest, but everyone knows there aren't many vents and especially in black matte, it's pretty warm in the summer. This helmet has great venting, and the eye port is gigantic. I haven't ridden over 60mph with it yet, but haven't noticed any buffeting, and the peak doesn't cause any pull at all. I don't understand the people who said this helmet pulls, or that it is loud. The qwest is one of the quietest helmets on the market and I want to say this one is right there with it. Maybe people are comparing the pull to not wearing a helmet?? In addition, I ordered and installed a smoke colored face shield. After riding without one for a day, I was impressed by how much the peak blocked out the sun. I don't think a tinted shield is necessary, but I'm used to riding with one so I'll keep it for a bit. I will say that the "smoke" color is much darker than expected, so prepare for that. I'm not sure I will even purchase another street helmet now that I've been exposed to the DS line. Thank you G-Max, for making such a quality piece of equipment at an amazingly affordable price point!
