Escape From the Lizzarks (Nnewts) Paperback – January 6, 2015

The illustrations are eye catching and complex, while at the same time easy to follow. The story quickly grabs the reader and makes for a page turning action story.This type of book appeals especially to boys who may be reluctant readers, and the illustrations hold their interest and encourage them to read more. Doug TenNapel creates another wonderful world in Nnewts. My kids (6 and 8) and I love all of Doug's books. We devoured this one in one night and ordered books 2 and 3. The world is creative and unique. And, as always with Doug TenNapel, the story feels cinematic. I'm amazed none of his books have been adapted into animated films. Can't wait to read 2 and 3!

The artwork is beautiful. The panel work keeps the line of action easy to follow and exciting. I love this book because all of Doug TenNapel's graphic novels are inventive and creative but this one is the most dreamlike. If you like J.R.R. Tolkien's books you're gonna love the origin story of a hobbit-like little Nnewt named Herk. This story can get a little dark but it still has a lot of classic Doug TenNapel humor.After reading this book I can't look at my pet newts the same way again.

Oh man! We love the Nnewt books at our house. I'm glad there's three separate books or there might be some conflict over who gets to read it into the wee hours of the night between our kids... and maybe the parents too. Maybe.

Fun graphic novel with a good story. I enjoyed the colorful drawings and the characters. The dialogue was pretty good most of the time but once in awhile it didn't flow so well. This is a book for younguns but I quite enjoyed it as an adult. Be aware that there are some grisly deaths at the beginning though that some children might not cope with. Look forward to grabbing book 2.

my 8 year old son LOVES Doug TenNapel comics- great positive messages compared to a lot of what is out there for boys his age, and the artwork is beautiful. You will not regret this purchase!

My 6th grade struggling readers love Doug TenNapel. We have his other book and my kids can't wait until it is their turn to have this book to take home. Good Job!!!

Doug Tennapel does it again with this amazing story of a young fry named Herk. This story is beautifully written and illustrated. My son and absolutely love it and can't wait for Part two to come out in February 2016. This is a must buy if you or anyone you know loves graphic novels.

A nouvelle année, nouveau livre de Doug TenNapel ! Et cette fois, il s'agit pour la première fois d'un premier tome de l'histoire (la suite,  Nnewts #2 - The Rise of Herk , est déjà annoncée). De plus, il n'y a pour une rare fois aucun personnage humain dans cette saga qui concerne des êtres ressemblant à des tritons, les Nnewts, et leurs ennemis mortels les Lizzarks, qui mangent les Nnewts et qui quant à eux ont l'apparence de petits dragons chinois.Le début de l'histoire nous met en présence de deux Nnewts chasseurs, Urch et Odetto, chargés d'apporter la nourriture aux habitants du petit village dans lequel habitent leur ami Gullimar, chasseur mais aussi magicien, son épouse Gayla, ses enfants dont le petit Herk et sa soeur Sissy. Les autres enfants sont encore à l'état d'oeufs non éclos. Herk continue de passer l'essentiel de son existence dans l'eau car ses jambes sont trop faibles pour le porter sur terre. Dans la soirée, Gullimar prépare en grand secret dans un coin de la maison familiale qui constitue son antre une recette magique mystérieuse qui tourne mal et lui apporte une étrange luminescence. Sur ces entrefaites, Urch et Odetto viennent le chercher pour aller... chasser. Il s'agit en fait pour eux de n'alarmer personne du village, et notamment pas Gayla, mais de montrer à Gullimar une chose inconnue et étrange qui leur paraît magique, trouvée plus tôt dans la forêt... Les trois amis se mettent en route, trouvent étonnamment beaucoup de gibier et tombent nez à nez avec un "Weretoad", qui est au crapeau ce que le loup-garou est à l'homme... Mais, pendant que les chasseurs sont éloignés du village, ce dernier fait l'objet d'une terrible attaque des Lizzarks. C'était un coup monté ! Des trois chasseurs seul un réchappe et il arrive bien trop tard pour sauver le village. Protégé par sa maman, Herk parvient à s'enfuir dans l'eau et va commencer pour lui une épopée fantastique, remplie d'épreuves et qui emprunte aux codes de l'héroic fantasy. Il y a des similitudes avec la série "Mice Templar", sauf qu'il ne s'agit ici nullement de mythes et légendes celto-nordiques et que le traitement est très différent. Vers la fin de ce premier tome, Herk a trouvé un village inconnu de Nnewts, et il est accueilli chaleureusement au sein d'une famille pour sa ressemblance avec un de leur fils disparu, Zerk... Mais le danger approche à nouveau, sous les traits déformés de quelqu'un que Herk a bien connu...Mis en très belles couleurs par Katherine Garner, collaboratrice habituelle de TenNapel, ce livre marque une nouvelle étape dans la progression permanente de cet auteur/dessinateur, dont le style s'affine pour l'occasion au plan de l'épaisseur des traits et se complexifie pour les décors. L'histoire ne pourra réellement être jugée qu'à la fin, mais ce début, innovant au regard de l'oeuvre précédente de TenNapel, est très encourageant. ****+ Nnewts #2 - The Rise of Herk
