Very good unit, does the job
Initial review: 12/29/13This is a very good digital food thermometer, more substantial and easier to read than the typical small units that I have had previously.Obtaining a quick and reliable reading requires putting the tip in the meat or other food and only then pressing the on button. If you turn the unit on before inserting it in the food it can take a very long time to reach its final temperature. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that it is not literally "instant" read; it takes several or many seconds to reach its final temperature. If I run into any difficulties with the unit I will update this review.Disclosure: I do not have a personal or business relationship with the seller or manufacturer of this device.

Accurate, but slow--FAST read, not INSTANT. Nice that it is waterproof
I bought 2 of these for Christmas--one for myself, and one for my sister. The readings are very accurate, having checked it against chipped-ice water (32F), and boiling water (212F). When checking meat on the grill, the other meat is still cooking while you are waiting for this thermometer to tick up in 2 degree increments after waiting to turn on the thermometer until it is in the meat, as instructed. The size is nice, with the head being about the size of a silver dollar. The safety tube for the probe cracked on both thermometers and the clip comes out of the tube and stays on the probe. It is very easy to read, but a backlight function would be nice. The temp chart on the back of the package has F temps in the C column, and the F temps are outrageous, and 2 of the meats are spelled "lamP" and "chicHen" . According to the chart, poultry would be done at 356F! This is a nice thermometer, but it is NOT instant read as advertised, even when used per their explicit instructions.. I also considered these 2 cheaper thermometers: Taylor 9842 Commercial Waterproof Digital Thermometer and CDN DTQ450X ProAccurate Quick-Read Thermometer

Easy to use and to read.
Easy to use and to read, unlike some of the smaller instant read type. Gives the temperature quickly. I've only had it a couple of days and so far so good. A tip that was shared with me: insert the probe into the meat first and then turn it on for quicker reading.

great product ...but......
I actually really like the product as far as efficacy and a quick read.....but the back battery area is testy..from day one. If my finger touches it, it turns off or resets...sometimes I have to squeeze/hold it in place while it's reading to get the temp :-/ ..it's probably just a defect with mine, as all the other great reviews are what motivated me to purchase it..otherwise does what it says.

Works great, I recommend but know the following
Works better than any of the others I have used in the past. Price right. BUT the chart for cooking temperatures is incorrect. For example the chicken should be 180 degrees Fahrenheit and 82 degrees Celsius. The package says 180 Celsius and 356 degrees Fahrenheit. They put the Fahrenheit numbers in the Celsius column and then converted these wrong numbers to Fahrenheit. Many web sites and all grill books have the correct temperatures, you will need to download and print a chart if you haven't got a book.Goggle "grill temperature chart" and pick one. Also, the supplier emailed me this note:TIP - How to Properly Use Thermometer:Don't turn on the Thermometer until inserted it in the meat, it will pick up the food temperature immediately and crawl up quickly. Otherwise, it will start with the room temperature and take a longer time to reach the final food temperature readingDo NOT let this deter you from buying one, it's really good.

Didn't work when it showed up. Had to bend the battery contact inside - not sure how long it will last now…
It showed up promptly and I was very happy to see how sturdily it seemed to be built. When I tried to turn it on though - failure. The screen flickered and didn't stay on. I tried a bunch of times and still no luck. I then took out the battery and put it back in. Same behavior. I then took out the battery and bent the metal contact for the battery that was inside the top of the thermometer. It took some doing and fiddling but I finally got it to make a solid connection and the thermometer seems to be working fine now - though it was a little tough to get the top of the battery compartment to stay on after the necessary internal modifications. Generally not happy with this product as I shouldn't have had to go through all that and now I'm wondering just how long it will last - not good quality control or production. Hopefully it will work well from here on out and last….

Fast and functional thermometer
I am very happy with the large digital display of the exact temperature. This takes the guess work out when I cook my meat. I also have an old thermometer that works on a dial with a pointer but it's hard to get an accurate reading with the lines so close to each other so I really like this digital thermometer much better. It also works really fast. I can see the numbers climb as soon as I put the stem into my meat. The stem is thick so it can pierce through the meat easily. I also love that this comes with a storage case to keep the stem protected. It's very important that my meat are cooked and so far this thermometer is working out great to insure that they are. The recipe ebook included with this thermometer is a wonderful addition to my recipe collection.

Works well as long as it's not placed in high heat
Works, but beware, if you use it in a high heat situation, the unit fails. I was using it in a Char Broil Big Easy cooker. If the thermometer was placed inside the unit only briefly, it would fail to read the temperature. In other applications, it appeared to be accurate.
